Pride month is an incredibly significant time of the year for the LGBT community. Every June, the LGBT community worldwide celebrates pride month. Furthermore, pride month commemorates the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan when police raided Manhattan's Stonewall In Bar.

Pride month started in the United States, and it has spread globally, attracting millions of people in major global cities. These cities include London, Paris, Sydney, Tel Aviv, and many more. An estimated four million people took part in New York City’s parade in 2019, and celebrations even spread to Singapore and Taiwan.

Pride is an important month to reflect on the progress made towards LGBT equality. Nonetheless, it’s also a month to reflect on the work that we still need to do! During the last year, the pandemic brought many pride events to a crashing halt. Last year was also the 50th anniversary of pride month, making the pandemic even more frustrating.

What is Pride Month all about?

On a positive note, because the world missed out on 50th-anniversary pride celebrations in 2020 – there’s an even greater incentive to support 2021 pride month in the Waterloo region. Despite the pandemic still looming large, organizers have arranged various incredible COVID-safe events.

Some other reasons why you should support pride month

Here are other reasons why you should support pride month!
  • Pride raises awareness

In many parts of the world, we’ve come a very long way to achieving LGBT equality. However, that doesn’t mean we’ve succeeded in bringing true LGBT equality – because we haven’t, and pride month raises fantastic awareness towards the progress still needed.

  • Pride normalizes LGBT families

Gay marriage is still a relatively modern phenomenon, and in many parts of the world, the legal system has only recently legalized it. Furthermore, in most of the world, gay marriage is illegal and LGBT couples aren’t allowed to have a family. So, when you support Pride month, you’re normalizing and supporting LGBT families.

  • Pride embraces overall equality

Although pride month was initially a celebration of the gay community, it also encourages equality in many other societal aspects. It brings people of races, religions, and cultures together. It’s a superb celebration and one that can help bring the world together.

  • Pride month gives LGBT youth confidence

One of the best ways to ensure the LGBT community finds true quality is to give confidence to the youth. Pride month is a show of togetherness that encourages the young LGBT community to be proud and open about themselves.

  • Pride month reminds us of our history

It was only in 1969 when it was illegal for gay people to meet at bars. Moreover, before this date, the LGBT community has had to face abuse for centuries. That said, pride month allows us to remember history and why we should never return to those dark days.

Here are some Pride month Waterloo events you can attend to show your support for the LGBT community. Unfortunately, the pandemic has meant these events are virtual, but you can still participate in these events from anywhere with an internet connection and show your support.
