The city of Provo, Utah, is one of the most promising within the tech industry and has been for years. So much so that the city is part of the area known as “Silicon Slopes”.
While not quite as famous as Silicon Valley, the area is proving to be one of the hottest places in the world of tech sales and software development to start a new career. Provo saw an increase in its tech industry employment figures of just under 65% from 2010 through 2017, with the sector now accounting for a tenth of the employment across the entire city.
Provo tech sales jobs are in high demand right now, let’s break it down.
A growing tech industry
With the national average of less than 20% growth for tech employment being well below that of Provo, it’s a promising place for university graduates across the country.
While the city has Brigham Young University supplying it with graduates for all kinds of industries, there is no doubt that it is producing more tech jobs than it can graduates to fill them. And with a cost of living 12.5% lower than that of the nearby Salt Lake City, Provo is an attractive place to start a new career for more than just the tech prospects.
Big tech companies
The reason for this massive growth is down to the myriad tech companies that have their home – or one of their homes – in Provo. One such example is Qualtrics, the tech “unicorn” that was purchased by German company SAP for $8 billion. The company was recently valued at more than $15 billion, having had a massive IPO that helped boost the image of tech sales in Provo for many years to come.
Other major companies within the tech industry that have a base in Provo include Adobe, the massive creation software that encompasses things like Photoshop and Premier Pro. In the world of smart home technology, Vivint and SimpleCitizen also have headquarters in the city of Provo.
Aside from commercial tech companies, the city of Provo also benefits from a lot of investment on the part of the US Air Force. With Hill Air Force Base nearby, development of a $35 million facility specifically designed for the development of software for fighter jets meant a significant number of jobs for tech employees in the city.
Significant employment growth
All of these big employers and future development prospects has powered the city to the top of the tech industry in the USA. Its tech sector experienced job growth of more than 5% between 2018 and 2019, which in turn led to growth in overall employment in the city of 3.3%. Provo was at the top of the table in Milken’s Best-Performing Cities Report in 2018, and in 2020 it was in second place behind San Francisco.
Thus, the booming tech industry in Provo makes it an attractive place for other companies and startups, but also for graduates and those currently looking to make the leap to a new career within the technology sector. It’s not just the prospects of a high-paying job that brings more people to the city, with salaries for positions like software engineers, graphic designers and tech sales staff being upwards of $100,000 per year, as the future prospects for property of the city are also promising.
An excellent place to live and work
House prices grew by 13.4% from 2019 to 2020, and they have been growing steadily for the past decade. This shows promise for those looking to jump onto the property ladder in the city, and is just another reason that Provo is proving to be an excellent place to both live and work for those looking for a new career in the tech industry.
