The Water Utilities Department is currently accepting applications for Senior Chemist in the Water & Sewer Laboratory. This Laboratory performs ongoing regulatory analyses on drinking water, wastewater which include testing hundreds of samples monthly for bacteriological and chemical levels. These functions support Oceanside’s water and wastewater treatment operations and industrial waste and stormwater programs. In addition, the Lab provides these services for neighboring agencies. About the positionThe Laboratory is seeking a scientifically experienced individual who can quickly assimilate to our team in a senior role. This Senior Chemist performs professional chemist duties and is relied upon to direct, train and participate in the work of laboratory personnel in process control and related research. In this role, you are also expected to become a subject-matter expert on utility-wide treatment and flow operations, regulatory reporting requirements and various interagency agreements.Your clear communication skills, organization, aptitude for meeting deadlines on a regular basis, and ability to handle managing priorities will help you excel in this role. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
The Senior Chemist supervises process control testing in the wastewater and/or water treatment processes; analyzes process methods and recommends improvements; devises and supervises experiments designed to provide solutions to water treatment and sewage treatment problems; oversees and maintains laboratory quality assurance programs to meet Environmental Protection Agency and other regulatory requirements; develops performance standards for work activities; administers policies, rules and procedures of the department; maintains laboratory accreditations and conforms to good laboratory practices; oversees preparation of sampling schedules for National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) and process control samples; prioritizes laboratory workload and assigns specific tasks to laboratory staff; compiles, records and manages laboratory data and records; relates test data to established standards of acceptance, and makes appropriate reports of conditions found; trains and rates the work performance of subordinates; and acts as Laboratory Supervisor during the supervisor's absence.

Environmental Conditions: Laboratory environment; exposure to chemicals and microbiological organisms; exposure to computer screens. Physical Conditions: Essential functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for sitting and standing for prolonged periods of time; speaking and hearing to exchange information; lifting of laboratory materials; visual acuity to read and interpret information.Selection Process: All properly completed applications and supplemental questionnaires will be reviewed and the most appropriately qualified individuals will be invited to continue in the selection process.
