GENERAL DESCRIPTION

The Director of Media Studies Production Services provides technical instruction and assistance to students enrolled in the 5 College Media Studies Program. Manage essential 5-C Media Studies technical operations. Install, maintain and repair video, film production and post-production equipment for the program.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Manage all operational facets of the IMS Production Center and Technical Operations, including those of the 5-C Media Studies Program. This includes WORKDAY administrative responsibilities (IMS Production budget management, expense reports and invoice approvals). Works with IMS Academic Director and the Assistant Director on Production budget expenses.

  • Provide In-class software and equipment demonstrations for the Intro to Video labs: designs, leads and creates in-class materials for class teaching demonstrations.

  • Edit Room and Lab Administration: Act as the co-administrator of the Production Center Edit Rooms and of the Computer Lab P104. Recommend software acquisition. Test software.

  • Instruct, advise, consult and conduct formal workshops for 5-C Media Studies Production students regarding technical and creative aspects of their class projects (production and post-production).

  • Co-manage the Web checkout software, and maintain 5-C Media Studies Department equipment inventories, records of student equipment loans and other related records. Co-manage equipment check-out for the 5-C program.

  • Design and produce annual senior websites and manage all aspects of the IMS production archive.

  • Program Intercollegiate Media Studies Visiting Artist Lecture Series/Cinematheque.

  • Teach one intermediate/advanced production course per year.

  • Oversees and performs installation, maintenance and repair of video, film and computer equipment in the 5-C Media Studies Department.

  • Recruit, schedule, instruct, train and supervise the Production Center student employees. Bi-Weekly approval of student work hours in WORKDAY.

  • Co-manage and maintain the Media Studies classrooms (Q120 and Q116), Video Studio (Q117) and the Kallick Gallery.

  • Creative Critique and Feedback: Provide individual creative critique and feedback of student work. Meet regularly with individual students.

  • Coordinates with the I.T. Department regarding computer leases, and with any computer hardware and software support issues that pertain to the Production Center.

  • Co-manage, coordinate and organize 5-C Media Studies events with the IMS Academic Director, IMS Chair, and with input from faculty. Plan and coordinate the end of the semester year screenings events. Tasks include coordinating with students, senior seminar faculty, gallery preparator, and IMS Production Co-Director with regard to equipment availability.

  • Perform other essential duties and tasks specific to the position.

Supervisory Responsibility : Yes Supervise Media Studies Technician and student employees.

Work Hours : The regular hours for this position are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Will be required to work nights and weekends to support the various events on campus. Will be part of the on-call rotation. Hours will vary due to needs of the College or department.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • The individual must possess knowledge, skills and ability to be able to successfully perform the essential functions of the position, or be able to explain or demonstrate how the essential functions will be performed, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • Ability to conceptualize and direct the growth of the 5-C Media Studies production facilities in accordance with the department's goals. Maintain an understanding of emerging practices in digital and analog media methodologies and praxis.

  • Experience with Studio and Gallery practices is a plus.

  • Previous work experience in secondary or higher education environments is desired.

  • Detailed working knowledge of the Adobe Creative Cloud software suite (Premiere Pro, Photoshop, After Effects and Audition).

  • Ability to plan and perform classroom demonstrations.

  • Ability to work with students on an individual basis. Understanding of production and post-production practices.

  • Basic technical skills and knowledge of equipment related to the IMS department (high definition and standard definition video, super 8 and 16mm film, digital production, video and sound editing).

  • Extensive Apple Macintosh computer experience. Ability to Coordinate with the Information Technology Department regarding software acquisition and installation, equipment leases, and lab teaching spaces.

  • Ability to troubleshoot, repair and maintain media related equipment.

  • Ability to interact well with diverse student groups and work effectively in a tutorial setting.

  • Knowledge of safe work practices as it pertains to equipment operation and repair.

  • Ability to bend stoop and lift heavy equipment.

Education : Bachelor’s degree from a film and video or art program; or any combination of education and experience that provides the required skills and abilities.

Experience : Four or more years of relevant experience required with the operation of electronic and computer assisted equipment necessary to a media studies program and audio visual services department, with at least two years in video production/post-production.

Licenses/Certifications : None required.

Physical Requirements: This is generally a sedentary position. Must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time and the manual dexterity to operate a computer for prolonged periods of time.
