Position Summary

  • Takes the technical lead on airfield lighting control system projects planning, executing and meeting strict deadlines.
  • Designs control system drawings and HMI software to meet the customers system requirements.
  • Assists in developing bills of material for custom control system quotes after analyzing customer requirements.
  • Responsible for communicating and promoting company image to the airport lighting industry during system installation and training.
  • Travels nationally or internationally to airport installations as required for project start-up, commissioning, testing and training.
  • Performs technical training classes for advanced products to internal and external customers.
  • Responsible for becoming familiar with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) airport policies, procedures and products.
  • Travels 40% of the time.

Essential Functions

Site Project Support

  • Coordinates on site electrical contractor installation requirements.
  • Coordinates on site schedule and itinerary with contractors.
  • Provides on site system power up of equipment.
  • Performs System Readiness Checks.
  • Performs/assists in Systems Acceptance Testing and formal customer walk throughs.

Project Management Support

  • Supports project life-cycle from quote to customer acceptance.
  • Works with and follows a project plan, communication plan and associated documents.
  • Manages assigned milestones, deadlines and tasks.
  • Proactively manages project risks, identifies potential risks and provides feedback to the Project Manager.
  • Manages a budget including labor, material and travel expenses for assigned tasks.
  • Effectively communicates task status to team members and stakeholders in a timely and clear fashion.

Bid Preparation Support

  • Designs solutions based on customer specifications with accurate bills of materials and costing.
  • Provides support for the preparation of technical written submittal packages for custom projects.

Testing and Validation Support

  • Performs both in house and customer validation testing.

Training and Presenting

  • Utilizes training standards and processes to produce internal and customer training programs.
  • Performs technical training internally or for customers.


  • Reviews and writes reports, manuals and test plans as required.
  • Self-monitors personal performance against annual targets by reviewing available department scorecards and dashboards.
  • Creates timely, expense reports, trip reports, preventive maintenance results documentation as required.


  • Supports contractors, and influence them to take positive action and accountability for their assigned work.
  • Develops, and grows any business relationships vital to the success of ADB SAFEGATE.
  • Develops best practices and tools for project and product support activities.

Supervisory Requirements

There are no supervisory responsibilities for this position.

Position Requirements

Formal Education & Certification

  • Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering (EE) or Engineering Technology (EET), Computer Science (CS) or Computer Engineering Technology (CET) preferred or relevant experience in the airfield/aviation lighting industry.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license.
  • Must maintain an insurable driving record.
  • Must pass any required BCI and FBI Background Check.

Knowledge & Experience

  • Two (2) years related Project Engineering experience or the equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Electrical troubleshooting and controls are a plus.
  • Fluent English (oral and written communication skills).

Airfield Lighting Industry

  • Maintains working knowledge of Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) airport policies, procedures and products.
  • Remains current on FAA Advisory Circulars and understand the airfield lighting industry and product lines.
  • Maintains working knowledge International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Advisory Circulars as required for international projects.
  • Maintains working knowledge of relevant international and national standards (FAA, ICAO) and CE/EMC/IEC requirements.

Electrical, Electronics and Computers

  • Well versed in basic electronics including low voltage and high voltage.
  • Able to review electrical wiring diagrams and 1-line diagrams.
  • Able to troubleshoot electrical systems using wiring diagrams.
  • Basic to moderate understanding of computers, computer networks and network communications.
  • Basic skills in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel).

Project Management Support

  • Able to work within project scope, including schedules, budgets, monitoring material and labor costs.

Teamwork and Communication

  • Accountable to recognize and escalate to leaders, roadblocks or constraints to any work assignment.
  • Excellent inter-personal skills to interact with all project stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to work as a member of a diverse team.
  • Able to work under pressure in order to meet deadlines.
  • Able to prioritize work according to relevance and importance to project and management.
  • Strong organization skills.

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to sit and talk or hear.
  • Ability to stand, walk for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to drive an airport vehicle, contractor vehicle or rental vehicle.
  • Ability to climb ladders.
  • Ability to traverse rough terrains.
  • Ability to travel to field locations.
  • Specific vision abilities required include color, close vision, distance vision, depth perceptions, and the ability to adjust focus.
    • Hand and eye coordination adequate to input computer, operate typewriter, calculator and other office equipment.
    • Ability to make and receive phone calls.
    • Ability to operate two-way radio.
    • Visual stamina and acuity adequate to review alpha/numeric data and to spend long periods looking at computer screen.

Job will generally be performed in an office environment, but may require travel to visit a customer’s location or construction job site. Conditions will vary at each location. While on a job site the employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions that include wet and/or humid, cold and heat conditions, working near moving mechanical parts.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The employee will be working with and around high voltage and high current equipment; there is a risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
