There is currently one vacancy in the water field crew.The Utility Worker Trainee is the entry-level classification in the Utility Worker series. Prior experience with water utility systems, piping, or related equipment is desirable but can be substituted by a willingness to learn and excel in these divisions.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
The Utility Worker Trainee will be performing unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in routine activities of constructing and maintaining water systems; assisting in the location and repair of water main breaks and leaks; loading and unloading material; excavating and backfilling trenches with hand and pneumatic tools; setting up and assisting in traffic control; assisting in the repair and installation of meters, valves, pumps, hydrants; laying joining, and fitting pipe; operating a cement mixer, pipe tapping machine, and similar equipment; raking and ironing hot asphalt materials; assisting in general construction and maintenance work; driving crew truck and dump truck; reading meters if necessary; performing work orders and duty assignments; and performing other duties as assigned. Water Maintenance: Utility Worker Trainees for this section perform a variety of routine maintenance and servicing operations for the City's water distribution system, which generally involves water lines, meters, valves, and fire hydrants.Wastewater Maintenance: Utility Worker Trainees for this section perform a variety of routine maintenance and servicing operations for the City's wastewater collection system, which generally involves sewer lines, pumps and manholes.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Environmental Conditions: Exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, gases, electrical energy, radiant energy, toxic materials, and inclement weather conditions; work in or with water and wastewater. The availability to work different shifts, including weekends and holidays. Physical Conditions: Essential functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for standing, walking or bending for prolonged periods of time; heavy, moderate or light lifting; operating motorized equipment and vehicles. Climbing, balancing stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, pulling, digging, and repetitive motions. Incumbents may be subjected to or work near moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, oils, inadequate lighting, work space restrictions and intense noises.Selection Process: All properly completed applications and supplemental questionnaires will be reviewed and the most appropriately qualified individuals will be invited to continue in the selection process. Failure to provide all required application material will result in disqualification from the selection process. The process may include any combination of a written exam, oral interview, and/or skills assessment to further evaluate job related experience and skills. Candidates who successfully complete the selection process will be placed on an eligibility list and will remain eligible for employment consideration for a minimum of six months.Note: Prospective employees will undergo, and must successfully pass, a background reference check (including fingerprinting) and a medical examination.
