Failure is easy.

But the reason failure is easy is not because life is hard.

No, failure is easy because the human brain's best survival mechanism is to move the goalposts.

How you measure success changes constantly. And if your brain tricks you into thinking that success is never within reach, it's easy to convince yourself that you are inevitably a failure.

But your brain is a liar.

To find success—to feel successful—you need to have a strong, healthy, and optimistic mindset. And this isn't just some wishy-washy self-help feel-good nonsense. It's scientifically backed:

When you have a bad attitude, it doesn't only affect your mood: It changes the way you think about yourself, the way you behave, and the way your body operates.

The power of positive thinking

Of course, for many of us, positive thinking is easier said than done. When you compare yourself to others, you may find that you are objectively less successful than they are. In many cases, the system is literally stacked against you.

But accepting failure also causes failure. It's a nasty, self-repeating cycle.

Success comes from within. Success doesn't mean that you need to earn millions of dollars, or have a better house/wardrobe/boat/kid than your neighbors.

Success means setting goals, identifying obstacles, overcoming adversity, and recognizing your victories. And then doing it again for new goals.

The way to become successful is to change your mindset.

And it all starts with positive thinking. Read on to learn how to develop strategies to change your mindset, and become a better you:

Identify your negative influences and bad habits

Negative influences and bad habits? Everyone has them; Even successful people. To get rid of them, you need to know what they are.

For many people, this extremely challenging because it requires a drop in your ego. Here are common bad habits that keep people from being and feeling successful in life:

  • Lack of self-confidence
  • Being completely risk-averse
  • Living in the past
  • Letting negativity dictate your mindset
  • Laziness
  • Lack of discipline
  • Not following your passion

These are all common habits that prevent you from becoming truly successful. Let’s take a deeper look at them.

Bad habits that are negatively impacting your mindset.

1 - Lack of self-confidence

According to statistics from the United Kingdom, only 42 percent of men believe they have the ability to complete their job. Furthermore, only half of men believe they are intelligent, and almost two-thirds of women don’t believe they can perform well at their job. Over 62 percent of women don’t think they are intelligent.

These statistics are staggering, but they tell a story about how many people suffer from self-confidence issues. Nonetheless, if you’re going to succeed in your career—you need to face these doubts and believe in yourself.

2 - Laziness

People say that a lot of success is luck. It's not untrue: Everyone needs some luck in life to get ahead.

But when you're faced with bad luck, a lack of privilege, or other unfortunate circumstances, hard work is the way out of it.

  • In 1978, only 5 percent of the population believed they were procrastinators. Today, that figure has grown to over 26 percent.
  • A study of 374 undergraduates found that procrastination made them unhappy. For example, 46 percent of undergraduates said procrastination made them quite a bit unhappy,” and 18 percent said it had an extremely negative effect on their minds.
  • The research found that procrastination leads to anxiety, depression, and even memory loss.

Let’s face it — laziness is a terrible habit in all aspects of life. But it's especially problematic at work, because that's where other people are most likely to notice, which means it can hold you back in a ton of other ways.

3 - Passion avoidance

What inspires you to pursue your chosen career?List out your passions and interests in life. Rank them!

A job that you're not passionate about can be a means to an end. But if that's your situation, you need to make sure you're finding fulfillment elsewhere.

Most importantly, you must pursue your goals rationally. You can only make the best decisions for yourself if you know what you want. If you're tired of your job, or it's keeping you from chasing your passions, make a change! But make that change knowing full well how it will help you pursue your own version of success.

Working a job that you don't enjoy is never ideal. It's made all the worse when your job doesn't enable you to do what you love.

Create a strategy to overcome bad habits

Did you know that it takes an average of 21 days to make or break a habit? Those 21 days are the hardest part. By comparison, it's a cakewalk after that.

Here’s how to manage the change:

Here is the best strategy that you can use to kick those bad habits & build better ones

1 - Identify your triggers

Changing your mindset starts with identifying your triggers. For example, what makes you lazy, or what makes you eat junk food? Once you’ve identified your triggers, you can stop yourself from continuing those habits.

2 - Focus on the why

Research from 2012 suggests that you’re more likely to change a behavior when the change is beneficial to you. So it’s important to focus on what you need to change and how you’re going to change it. If you’re ever falling back into the bad habit, remind yourself of why you started!

3 - Find Supportive Friends

Your friendship and networking circle is crucial in life. Famously, Jim Rohn stated that you’re the average of the five people you spend the most time around. So, if you have an awesome group of friends that are willing to grow and succeed with you, then ask them for help to keep you accountable.

4 - Practice mindfulness

Many of us forget the importance of self-awareness. American life is very fast-paced, and city living can be a straight-up hustle. It's easier to check out than to tune in.

Only 14 percent of Americans have ever meditated. But being mindful is a great way to keep focused on what matters.

5 - Use reminders

It’s easy to forget why you wanted to break a habit in the first place. Perhaps you’re giving up drinking? When your friends ask you to come out for some drinks, it can be hard to stay disciplined. But that's the perfect time to get reminded about your goal and why you wanted to achieve it. Leaving reminders will help you change your habits!

Build yourself a positive community

When you want to build a better you, your community is very important. So who do you surround yourself with? You should ensure your positive community includes the following:

Build a positive community around you with these values.
  • Common goals and dreams: If your community has the same life goals, you’re far more likely to achieve the goals together. You are the average of the five people you spend the most time around — so choose wisely!
  • Supportive friends: Positivity is contagious, but so is negativity. When you surround yourself with negative people, you set yourself up for failure.
  • Honesty: There’s nothing worse than having acommunity that doesn’t support you, and fails to be honest with you. Find friends that have your interests at heart and will keep you on target—even if they sometimes come across as harsh.
  • Loyalty: Creating a better version of yourself is never easy. You’re going to fall on hard times. But with a loyal community around you, your network will help to pull you through the bad times, and get you on the road to success.

Achieve your success, with the right mindset

Life is tough, and success isn’t straightforward. It takes a lot of hard work and personal development. But changing your mindset can help you achieve your goals!
