It's hard to believe that despite spending most of our time there, it's hard to set healthy boundaries at work. If you work in a high-stress role, it's even more important to have boundaries in place to protect your health.

In the quickest way ever, here are 7 quick ways you can and should set boundaries at work. Did we mention this will be quick?

1. Set realistic expectations

Always working overtime and taking on more than you can handle? It's time to have a conversation with your boss about setting realistic expectations. Your work-life balance depends on maintaining boundaries at work.

Overworking yourself is not sustainable and will only lead to burnout. This will take a toll on you both physically and mentally. Learn more about the effects below to see the importance of setting realistic expectations.

2. Don't be afraid to say no

Saying yes to everything that's asked of you is a recipe for disaster. Learning to say no is an important part of setting boundaries. It's okay to decline when you're asked to do something that's outside of your job description. Or that, frankly, you don't have time for.

3. Take regular breaks.

Working non-stop is not only unhealthy, but it's also unproductive. Make sure to take regular breaks throughout the day. Yes, even if it's a few minutes to step away from your desk and clear your head.

Your brain will thank you! Your productivity will thank you. And yes, even eventually you will start thanking yourself.

4. Set limits on after-work hours

Just because you have a job that requires you to be available 24/7 doesn't mean that you actually are available 24/7. It's important to set limits on after-work hours so that you can have a life outside of work. Set up an automated email response letting people know that you're unavailable.

Yes, we know this is harder than it sounds. But learning to unplug at the end of the day is a critical step in helping you set boundaries at work.

5. Don't gossip.

We almost left this off the list. But maintaining others' boundaries at work is as important as guarding your own. Gossiping is counterproductive, harmful, and plain mean. If someone approaches you with gossip, kindly shut it down. Say that you're not interested in hearing negative things about other people. Gossiping only leads to drama and unnecessary conflict.

6. Be assertive when communicating with others

It's important to be assertive when communicating with others, especially when setting boundaries. But, there's a difference between being assertive and being rude or aggressive. Make sure that your communication is always respectful. Even if you're saying no to something or disagreeing with someone else's point of view.

You can be kind and respectful, while also being direct. Learning to walk this line can take you a long way in your career.

7. Make self-care a priority

Taking care of yourself should be a top priority. Especially if you work in a high-stress environment. Make sure to schedule time for activities that reduce stress and promote relaxation. Try exercise, yoga, meditation, journaling, or reading. Whatever turns your brain off and helps you find your zen. When you take care of yourself, you'll be better equipped to handle whatever comes your way at work.

Finding you need more than a trip to the yoga studio to help you recharge? Ask for the time you need. Mental health breaks can be scary to ask for, but they should be encouraged! Taking the time to recharge away from work is an important part of self-care. Want help asking for a mental health break? Learn more below!
