Why Tech?

The technology industry is vast and growing! It also has a multiplicity of entry-level positions in sales you can take advantage of. They are great entry points as you can easily use your current skills to find success. Ready to unlock unlimited earning potential in a standard corporate day schedule? No more nightshift, fourteen-hour days, or daily risks to your own health. Find tech sales jobs that can offer you flexible schedules and/ or work-from-home options. And did we mention in tech sales you can be selling the devices you used to use on a daily basis in your nursing career?

Examples of companies looking for medical tech sales include:

  • Hinge Health - help advance their complete Digital MSK Clinic solutions. They offer personalized care with sensors and computer vision to minimize pain and coordinate efforts with in-person MSK treatment.
  • IQVIA - serves the combined industries of health information technology and clinical research as part of the largest Healthcare Data Science Company.
  • PatientPop - HIPAA-compliant platform for growing your practice with measurable improvement metrics.
  • Flatiron - a healthcare technology company that sources and analyzes data from cancer patients to improve and accelerate patient care.

The 5 Tech Sales Skills You Already Have as a Nurse

Before starting your career in tech sales, it is important to know your transferable skills. And more importantly, how you can accurately represent them in the interview process. There are five skills that all nurses possess that will help you in tech sales.

1 - Compassion

You already know you're compassionate. But let's share with you why that's a great skill to have in tech sales!

This will set you apart from others as compassion and empathy often go hand in hand. An empathetic sales rep can put themselves in their buyer's shoes, not just see everyone as a sales target. Moreover, you are able to distinctly understand your customers’ pain points. With this, you can then effectively utilize your compassion to elevate your sales interactions and focus your energy on making a real difference.

Making clients feel safe discussing sensitive needs — and helping them accurately solve problems with the products and/or services you sell in tech is a superpower. Almost every tech company wants tech sales reps with this important skill.

2 - Effective Communication

Discussing treatment with patients and their family requires a completely different communication approach than when discussing the same treatment with medical staff.

As a nurse, you have developed excellent language skills to communicate efficiently. Translating high-level academic and medical content with detail and technical specification is necessary for each unique person. Your diverse communication skills are greatly appreciated in tech sales for companies with global clients and when speaking to a variety of different types of customers.

Customers always require help which greatly varies. From technologically advanced details of features to high-level discussions of business goals, being able to efficiently communicate is important. Speaking to the proper audience with the right talk track can make all the difference!

3 - Critical thinking & problem solving

Just as with medical diagnosis, sales reps often require advanced problem-solving skills. They need to help isolate the core issue without being distracted by the periphery side effects. Customers may find that they have a problem and need someone who can delve in and point out the central pain point. As a nurse, your skills in this field are unparalleled.

Once identified, you can propose solutions that directly impact the client for the better and will in turn answer all secondary issues.

Nurses work until the work is done or the next shift takes over.

In tech sales, you will be responsible for keeping the sales conversation moving forward. This requires hustle and intentional engagement. Moreover, there is often more free time, more scheduling flexibility, and certainly no more late shifts!

Your experience in working until the job is done, and ensuring successful hand-off of patients is a phenomenal skill set to bring into tech.

5 - Industry knowledge

Consider how much medical knowledge you have introduced to your vocabulary over your career. In medical tech sales, those without a medical background must learn the proper use of this vocabulary. This is not an insurmountable obstacle for someone new to the industry to overcome. But already having this knowledge is a huge advantage to you!

Best of all, you will also find yourself having more credibility with clients. This all contributes to your career success as a trusted advisor.
