A teaser, even if you use a teaser template, has to feel like YOU. If you can believe it, 1 to 3 sentences is more than enough space to paint a clear picture of who you are and what you hope to accomplish in your career. The point of a teaser is for an employer to get a sense of who you are, and be interested enough to learn more.

Showing off your personality can feel risky and vulnerable, especially if you haven’t had to in the past. But give yourself a chance to succeed by giving your reader a reason to get to know you. Half of any job hunt is making sure you’re understood. Communicating your vibe” is key to making connections and achieving Career Success.

There are a LOT of uses for a teaser. From your LinkedIn About Me” section, to having a quick 3 sentence pitch when you’re describing yourself to new professional connections. At the end of the day, a teaser like this can help you define — and refine — your goals and really nail down what makes you unique both as a person and as an employee!

What makes a great teaser?

Keep It Brief

Don’t over-complicate things. The best teasers are short and to the point. Instead of being all-zazz, make sure to start with substance and go from there. If you’re passionate about Customer Success and hope to grab a job as a Customer Success Manager sometime soon, but you also breed chickens in your backyard, lead with your professional goals and add a few words about the chickens for some color.

Jessica is an empathetic leader who forms strong, long-term relationships with the clients — and 16 pet chickens — in her care.”

In the above example, Jessica’s empathy and creativity are both underlined by her hobby of farming. Her hobby is just another example of her dedication and big-heartedness. In a single sentence, we have insight into her personality, soft skills, and proof of both!

Personalize It

Make it your own. Later in this article, we’ll give you a mad-lib style teaser template to get you started, but — while keeping it professional — you have permission to go a little off-script if it feels more authentic to you.

The most important thing to remember is that YOU are the product, and so a potential employer is looking to see what YOU are all about. Let yourself shine through. Remember that what makes you stand out from the crowd isn’t only your personality, but how you communicate.

Make It Engaging

Now it’s time to add some flavor to this concoction.

Trying to be funny or engaging can lead you down the wrong path. A few simple tricks I like to use come from an old Hollywood screenwriting trick. When pitching a new movie, screenwriters recommend something called a logline. A logline is essentially a 1 or 2 sentence summary of your movie. Similarly, a teaser gives you 1 to 3 sentences to tell employers your story.

In Blake Snyder’s iconic screenwriting book titled Save the Cat, he says:

...if you can learn how to tell me ‘What is it?’ better, faster and with more creativity, you’ll keep me interested. And incidentally, by doing so before you start writing your script, you’ll make the story better, too.”

Figure out what makes your journey and goals unique. As Alyx Parks — career coach and Uvaro’s Manager of Member Programming — likes to say, Find your why!” You’ll be able to pursue your goals more clearly and with more drive if you know why you’re pursuing them. You can even take a workshop on defining that for yourself.

Uncovering your why workshop.

Snyder also says a compelling logline should include…

Irony

Similar to the Alanis Morissette song, it’s not the tried and true irony that we’re looking for. But you should express the hook of your story. It creates intrigue and, in the words of Snyder:

...like the cover of a book; a good one makes you want to open it, right now, to find out what’s inside.”

Like a former bartender whose passions led him to a successful career with restaurant management software company like 7Shifts, what is something intriguing about you? What’s your edge? What makes you a little wacky?

A compelling mental picture

Remember that every adjective you use should show an employer your potential, and your goals! Don’t over-describe yourself, but offer just enough to paint a picture and let their imaginations run wild.

  • PRO TIP: Using adverbs that contradict an adjective can create a compelling image:

Michael is frighteningly good at jenga.”

  • PRO TIP 2: Using adjectives that contradict a subject can also similarly create a compelling image:

Lucy’s cold-call scripts are delicious.”

Experience and salary

For screenwriters, a logline should allude to the intended audience and cost. For job profile descriptions, show an employer your past experience, and how that may feed into your expected salary. If you have 6 years of management experience, your salary band will be different than a new sales rep. A potential employer wants to know where you fit into the company on every level.

How to Write the Perfect Teaser

While there isn’t an industry-standard teaser template, there are definitely some tips and tricks you can use to make full use of those 1 to 3 sentences. Whether you’re using this teaser in conversation, for your LinkedIn bio, or even on Uvaro’s website, you want to stand out and make an impression.

A teaser template is a great way to make the perfect teaser! You need three ingredients. 1. Hooke The Audience 2. Prove Yourself. 3. Find Your Why

Sentence 1: Hook the audience

Give the reader a sense of who you are and what you’re professionally passionate about. Allude to your main career goal, and why it’s achievable to you.

With 7 years of experience as a plumber, Taylor is hoping to marry their passion for fixing things and people-skills in the customer success sphere.

Diving into tech sales for the first time, Shandra noticed that the organizational skills she learned with the girl guides had made her an exceptional sales leader.

Both of Ivan’s kids might be all grown up, but his promising tech sales career is still in its infancy.

In all of these examples, you can see how tying a prior career path, prior experience, or personal life to the tech sales industry creates intrigue. Find your angle! Show us a little part of you right from the start.

Sentence 2: Prove yourself

This is where your practical experience will be most helpful. Show how your experience makes you an exciting candidate, or someone others should get to know. More than that, show everyone that you’re qualified. Whether you’re qualified NOW for the goals you want to reach, or whether you’re on the path towards those goals, employers want to see the active steps you’ve taken to get there.

Taylor enrolled in Uvaro’s 6-week Customer Success Management course to gain the skills necessary to grow their business and foster stronger relationships with their clients.

After being offered a full time position at Salesforce, Shandra was promoted to a management position after only 1 year on the sales floor.

Inspired by speakers he saw at the 2022 B2B Summit North America, Ivan enrolled and has been accepted to Uvaro’s 12-week Tech Sales foundations program.

Even if you’re starting a brand new career, your experience and skills can be transferable. Show your interest in the field you are breaking into, and show how enthusiastic you are to learn more. A willingness to grow is a HUGE asset in the eyes of many hiring managers. Even if you don’t have all the experience, prove that you are eager and hungry to find the experience and skills you need and work hard to excel in your job and career.

Sentence 3: Find Your Why

Use this optional last sentence to really show off your personality. You’ve shown who you are in the first sentence, you’ve given a glimpse into your professional credentials with the second sentence. Use this last bit of space to wow them in whatever way best suits YOU. Show them the reason you drive your career forward! What is your passion? Your motivation? Your why?

Taylor has gone from fixing pipes to polishing sales pipelines with their empathetic, and detail-oriented approach to clients.

Shandra’s management and mentorship experience feed her ongoing passion to empower young women to pursue tech sales full time, just like she did.

Ivan’s youngest son gave Ivan a stellar review, saying, If my dad is as open-minded, dedicated and excited about sales as he was about raising us, any company would be lucky to have him.”

With all 3 of the examples above, you get a dose of personality both in the information shared, but also in the format they’re given. A quote from his son shows Ivan’s family values extend to the workplace. The sentence provided shows that Ivan is creative, and has a big heart! Shandra’s gives examples of her volunteer work, and what values she brings to a company. Taylor shows off their sense of humor with a clever pun.

Some More Great Examples

Dwayne The Rock” Johnson

Even the mega-famous can benefit from defining their goals!

After an incredibly successful career in wrestling, Dwayne’s performance experience, ability to captivate an audience, and star-power brought him to the silver screen. Coming in hot with his first record-breaker Fast Five, Dwayne’s lucrative action-career has led him to star in several franchises such as Journey to the Center of the Earth and the new Jumanji remakes. His acting career continues to break boundaries in representation for both Black and Samoan actors and his philanthropic efforts mirror this.
