Workplace habits come in all shapes and sizes. If you’ve ever caught yourself on autopilot scrolling through TikTok in the middle of a busy work day, you’ll know it’s not necessarily because you’re bored or have nothing to do — it could simply be a workplace habit!

Maybe not the best habit, of course… but a habit nonetheless, as it’s a behavior that we’ve learned to do through repetition or practice to the point where we don’t really think about it anymore.

Good workplace habits can take time and effort to build, but they pay off in the long run!

Habits can be learned – no one is born knowing to wash their hands before eating or brushing their teeth before bed – or developed unconsciously.

They can also be helpful (like exercising regularly) or harmful (like biting your nails). And while some workplace habits may seem small, they can make a big impact on our lives.

Here are 4 good workplace habits you should start forming today!

1) Get enough sleep

Oddly enough, our first workplace habit starts at home! It’s no secret that sleep is important for our overall health and well-being.

But did you know that it’s also essential for productivity at work? According to the National Sleep Foundation, sleep-deprived workers are more likely to make errors, have accidents, and experience absenteeism.

You may improve your sleep by practicing good habits like:

  • Going to bed and getting up at consistent times each day (yes, even on weekends!)
  • Avoiding meals, caffeine, and alcohol before bedtime
  • Keeping your bedroom dark, quiet and relaxing
  • Putting away your phone and turning off your TV
Getting enough sleep is a great personal habit -- and a great workplace habit too!

2) Be on-time

We know – it’s all too easy to fall victim to distractions overtaking other priorities or gets caught in the flow of work without realizing you’ve just missed a meeting!

But as they say: showing up is half the battle! Arriving on time (or even a little bit early), showing up to meetings prepared and ready to participate, and meeting your deadlines are important if you want to impress your boss and win over customers.

To help you turn routine into workplace habit:

  • Set alarms and reminders on your phone to keep you on track
  • Give yourself extra time if you need it
  • Keep a schedule and check in on it regularly
  • Prepare what you can ahead of time so you don’t have to rush at the last minute

3) Take breaks

We all know that feeling of being overwhelmed at work. When we have too much on our plate, it can be tempting to just power through and try to get everything done as quickly as possible. But that’s not always the best strategy.

Taking breaks throughout the day can actually improve your productivity levels by giving your brain a chance to rest and recharge!

PRO TIP: Next time you’re feeling overwhelmed, take 5 and come back feeling refreshed and ready to tackle whatever comes your way!

Not sure what to do during those 5 minutes? May we suggest:

  • Taking a quick walk outside
  • Grabbing a coffee or snack
  • Saying hello to a coworker
  • Having a short meditation
  • Reading a chapter of a novel
  • Doodling in your notebook
  • Listening to your favorite music
Get in the habit of giving your brain a break to keep it in tip-top shape.

4) Stay organized

This one may seem like a no-brainer, but it’s worth mentioning because it really is that important! Staying organized at work can help you be more productive, efficient, and even less stressed.

Take some time each week to declutter your desk, organize your computer files, and tidy up your office space. You (and your boss, if you work in-office) will be glad you did! If it feels like we just asked you to climb Mt. Everest, remember: you don’t have to hit peak cleanliness all at once!

PRO TIP: Start with one simple habit – like taking 15 seconds to wipe down your desk at the end of every day. (You may even find yourself putting files, papers, and notebooks away to do so!) Once you build momentum on that workplace habit, you can add more to the mix.
