Purpose and General Description:

NCC is looking for a passionate person to join the New Brunswick stewardship team as a NB Coastal Conservation Intern. Working closely with NCC’s Community Engagement Coordinator and local partners, this internship position will help the stewardship team conduct restoration work of coastal habitats in northeastern New Brunswick, engage community volunteers in events, create educational materials, collect site specific data on human disturbance, as well as monitor habitats and species productivity. This position is intended to provide an inspiring, learning-focused environment for a junior professional interested in caring for habitats and species of the province’s coastal zone.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Work to restore vulnerable dune habitat by planting dune vegetation
  • Help promote and recruit community volunteers for events to support partners in restoration activities including beach, dune, and intertidal habitat
  • Develop bilingual coastal educational materials and distribute to locations frequented by tourists
  • Work with NCC’s stewardship team to conduct site data that will contribute towards development of a multi-year dune restoration plan for Miscou Island
  • Assist partners with Piping Plover monitoring
  • Conduct stewardship tasks to help care for NCC protected nature reserves such as invasive species removal, garbage collection, and sign maintenance
  • Complete assessments of shorebird roosting sites to assess risk of human-wildlife interactions
  • Attend and evaluate public events to determine their importance for community engagement for NCC
  • Help support Healthy Coast NB partners as needed
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Skills and Attributes:

This posting is targeted to individuals possessing the following skills and traits:

  • University or College degree in natural sciences or sustainable development preferred with a demonstrated interest in nature, conservation, volunteerism and community; Education in social science an asset; Upper-level program students considered;
  • Biological and/or field work experience
  • Experience with conducting literature review for research purposes
  • Fluently Bilingual in French/English is required;
  • Ability to work independently and as a team, be self-motivated, display superior time management skills, have attention to detail, and the ability to meet deadlines;
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to interact with the public and partners to obtain a holistic view of an issue
  • Familiarity with common computer software (Microsoft Office Suite, graphics programs);
  • Valid driver’s license, ability to rent a vehicle (must be at least 21 years of age).

Terms of Employment:

  • Subject to funding, this is a 16-week position from May 12, 2025, until August 29, 2025;
  • Compensation: $20.00/hour;
  • The position is Remote but must be based in New Brunswick’s Acadian Peninsula.
    • Travel throughout the region will be common, with a small number of overnights. Travel expenses will be reimbursed.
    • The incumbent will be expected to work 2-3 weekends and have corresponding days off during the week.
  • Positions will include “office work” that will be completed in a work from home setting.
  • Some position funding may require the candidate to have been attending university or college and returning to school in the fall. Some funding may require the candidate be aged 30 or under.
