NRDC is seeking a Tax Advocate to work with the Climate & Energy team in our Washington, D.C. office.
Position Summary
NRDC is hiring a Tax Advocate, starting as soon as possible. The Tax Advocate will be an integral part of NRDC’s core tax policy, implementation and legal defense team; engage with a wide range of key stakeholders; educate policy makers; and develop innovative future tax policies and strategies. The Tax Advocate will focus on core clean energy, transportation, and climate-related tax credits. They will bring extensive knowledge of tax credit design to augment NRDC’s regulatory, legislative, and litigation efforts.
The Tax Advocate will work in NRDC’s Climate & Energy Program, partnering with policy advocates, litigation team members, energy and transportation experts, and communications professionals. They will collaborate with environmental, consumer, low income, labor, racial justice, community, business, and public health groups. They will be based in NRDC’s Washington, D.C. office under the supervision of a senior member of the Climate & Energy Program.
- Lead key stakeholder engagement on tax priorities, including by developing strong relationships with business groups, individual companies, state and local governmental entities, and other non-profits and consumer and low-income advocates.
- Contribute essential thought leadership and strategic planning to help set NRDC’s short- and long-term tax law goals related to climate, environmental impacts, and affordability.
- Synthesize lessons learned from recent developments in energy and climate tax policy.
- Advise and collaborate with a multi-faceted internal team (including campaign, communications, public engagement, and policy experts) to advance tax law implementation priorities.
- Advocate for and be a public speaker around clean energy tax topics.
- Add a unique perspective and relevant recent experience to a strong and collegial team that is focused on collaboration, approaches advocacy with innovation and optimism, and is committed to leveraging the full range of expertise within NRDC and among its partners.
- Participate in the development and setting of the longer-term strategic direction for NRDC’s tax law priorities including new ideas for mutually advancing affordability and rapid clean energy and climate progress.
- Bachelors in relevant field or an equivalent combination of education and direct experience. Master’s Preferred
- Seven years of relevant work experience in the field of tax law and/or tax and economic policy.
- Substantial recent experience with energy and climate tax incentives.
- Proven track record working with governmental agencies and Congress.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent research and analytical skills.
- Exceptional legal writing, analytical, and oral communication skills.
- Strong academic and professional record.
- Comfort interpreting scientific and technical concepts.
- Strong interpersonal skills and enthusiasm for teamwork.
- Capacity to work hard, efficiently, and independently.

- High proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), in addition to knowledge of or ability to learn relevant industry and NRDC specific software and platforms.

We offer competitive salaries, excellent benefits, and a supportive working environment. Salary is based on a nonprofit scale and is commensurate with skills and experience. Internal equity will be reviewed and considered to determine a final offer. For this position, the salary range is $130,000 to $150,000.
NRDC operates under a hybrid work model. Employees are required to come to the office 8 days per month.
