POSITION: Communica)ons Specialist and Storyteller (Programs)
REPORTS TO: Director of Communica)ons

POSITION SUMMARY
The Communica)ons Specialist and Storyteller (Programs) serves as a key liaison between the
Communica)ons Department and the Conservancy’s core programs: conserva)on, educa)on
and recrea)on.
This role focuses on developing strategic communica)ons plans and craRing compelling content
to highlight the Conservancy's impact. The specialist collaborates with program teams to craR
strategic messaging, execute marke)ng plans and support visual storytelling. This posi)on
works closely with the Director of Communica)ons to produce wriTen content for mul)ple
channels, including the website, biannual magazine, newsleTers, internal communica)ons,
annual reports, event promo)ons, social media posts, videos and other digital/printed
materials.
The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with excep)onal wri)ng skills, knowledge of AP Style,
and the ability to create compelling stories through visuals and the wriTen word. They must be
able to manage mul)ple projects in a fast-paced environment while maintaining aTen)on to
detail.
LOCATION
Hybrid role based in our Long Beach office on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with remote work on
most other days depending on organiza)onal needs. This posi)on involves regular ferry travel to
Catalina Island, as determined by project and program needs.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Communica)ons Liaison: Partner with program teams to iden)fy key ini)a)ves,

- Content Crea)on: Conduct interviews, write ar)cles and produce stories for plaZorms
- Photography and Graphics: Capture high-quality photos and create basic digital graphics
- Email Newsle: Plan, write and produce external and internal
- Strategic Planning: Develop and implement communica)ons and project plans that align
- Project Management: Coordinate program-specific communica)ons projects, managing
- Brand and Style Compliance: Adhere to AP Style and organiza)onal branding in all
- Crisis Communica)ons Support: Assist the Director of Communica)ons in craRing
- Event Communica)ons: Collaborate with program teams to develop promo)onal
- Professional Development: Enhance individual and organiza)onal communica)ons
prac)ces with Conservancy staff and partners.
- Content Development: Collaborate with internal subject maTer experts to create
statements, newsleTers, internal communica)ons, annual reports, press releases, event
materials, social media, fundraising appeals and videos.
- Editorial Standards: Ensure all content adheres to editorial integrity, organiza)onal style
- Performance Analy)cs: Monitor and report on performance metrics, including email
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Ability to manage video and photography equipment along with traversing rugged

- Brand Stewardship: Ensure content aligns with organiza)onal branding, tone and style
- Mission Alignment: Passion for conserva)on and nonprofit work, with experience
communica)ng mission-driven ini)a)ves.
Educa)on and Experience
• Bachelor’s degree in communica)ons, journalism, marke)ng or a related field—or
- At least 5-7 years of experience in communica)ons, journalism, or project/campaign
management.
Preferred Qualifica)ons:
- Background in journalism as a mul)media reporter or producer.
- Experience working with project management and customer reten)on management
- Knowledge of environmental issues, conserva)on prac)ces and the unique ecosystems
of California or similar regions.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
ESTIMATED STARTING SALARY RANGE:
$85,000 - $106,000 annually, based on skills and experience.
