Job Description
In this role, you will model dynamic systems and implement power control loops and energy optimization strategies for solar energy, storage solutions, electric vehicles (EVs), and connected products. Your primary focus will be to develop strategies that maximize renewable energy usage for our customers while reducing their electricity costs.
As a key member of the Controls and Modeling team, you will leverage MATLAB and Simulink to create models for solar generation, energy storage, electric vehicles, EV chargers, customer loads, generators, inverters, charge controllers, and other energy sources and loads within residential settings. You will conduct simulations, develop real-time power control algorithms, and generate C/C++ code for integration into the embedded software of our products.
Additionally, you will play a pivotal role in defining energy management algorithms based on forecasting and optimal control theory.
What will you do?
- Work with product, compliance, and firmware/software teams to define new power and energy control strategies
- Use MATLAB & Simulink to create models of solar, electric vehicles, energy storage, generators, inverters, charge controllers, loads, and other power devices within the home
- Develop real-time power control and energy optimization algorithms for solar production, energy storage, and load management in the home
- Develop/integrate forecasting models for customers' load, dynamics of electric vehicles, solar production, electricity price
- Design, simulate, test, and generate C/C++ code in MATLAB/Simulink
- Write engineering requirements, test plans, and validation reports
- Architectural design of control logic including block diagrams and flow charts
Qualifications:
- MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering or Mechatronics Engineering with specialization in Control Theory
- 3+ years of proven experience in control design and simulation, preferably with DER/Microgrid controllers, HEMS, and/or inverter closed loop controls.
- Strong understanding of Systems Approach and Closed-Loop/Open-Loop control theory, including regulator tuning and sensitivity analysis.
- Proficient in MATLAB and Simulink for model-based design and automatic code generation.
- Experience with energy management strategies, including rule-based and optimal control.
- Knowledge of grid compliance standards (IEEE 1547) and DER communication protocols (e.g., SunSpec).
- Strong programming skills in Python and C/C++, with excellent teamwork and communication abilities.
