Understanding The B Corp Certification: More Than Just A Label

Before we dive into the behind-the-scenes of our B Corp journey, let's make sure we're all on the same page about what this certification actually means

Ready for a quick level-set? Let's get into it!

What is B Corp

Think of B Corp Certification as more than just a label—it's a rigorous, multi-faceted evaluation of a company's dedication to making a positive impact and doing business for good. But what does this evaluation actually involve? According to the official B Corp guidelines, companies are assessed based on three key pillars:

Social and Environmental Performance: This isn't just about what a company says; it's about what it does. From sustainability initiatives to employee well-being, this pillar scrutinizes how a company impacts both people and the planet.

Public Transparency: In today's world, transparency isn't a luxury; it's a necessity. This pillar evaluates how openly a company shares information about its social and environmental efforts.

Legal Accountability: This pillar goes beyond just complying with laws and regulations. It's about being legally accountable for the company's actions and decisions, ensuring they align with the broader good.

So, when a company is named as a Certified B Corporation, it's not just meeting high standards in ethical business—it's committing to 'business as a force for good.'

The B Corp Application Process

Becoming B Corp certified isn't a one-time accolade; it's a continuous journey that permeates every aspect of a business, from ethical payroll practices to employee well-being. And becoming a Certified B Corporation isn't a mere vanity sticker; it's a legal commitment to serve not just shareholders, but all stakeholders, embedding a broader sense of corporate responsibility into your company's DNA.

The assessment will have B Corp status judge companies on their positive impact in five key areas…

  1. Environment: Commitment to sustainable practices and responsible resource management.

  2. Community: Positive impact through charitable contributions, volunteer work, and community engagement.

  3. Customers: Offering more than products, but a socially and environmentally responsible experience.

  4. Governance: Upholding high standards of transparency and accountability.

  5. Workers: Ensuring employee well-being through fair wages, benefits, and a healthy work environment.

The B Corp Advantage: A Commitment to Sustainable Success

Embracing B Corp Certification is more than a strategic move; it's a declaration that your business values the well-being of all stakeholders, not just shareholders. This isn't about short-term gains or surface-level trust. It's about building enduring relationships with consumers, suppliers, and investors who share your mission.

Moreover, B Corps become talent hubs for professionals who want more than a paycheck—they want to make a meaningful impact. The requirement for recertification every three years ensures that this isn't a fleeting commitment, but a long-term pledge to uphold the highest standards of corporate responsibility.

The Journey to becoming B Corp Certified: A Road Less Traveled

The Strategy

“We didn't wake up one day and decide, "Hey, let's become a B Corp." Said Uvaro CEO Joseph Fung when reflecting on the reasons for becoming B Corp certified. “Nope, this was a strategic move, in line with our mission of redefining Career Success for the greater good. It was like training for a marathon—long, arduous, but oh-so-worth it. This certification confirms that we're on the right path and sets the stage for how we evolve as a Career Success company—responsibly, inclusively, and impactfully."

To use some tech sales verbiage, this was a LONG enterprise sale not a quick 48-hour deal cycle. We spent over 18 months digging into every nook and cranny of Uvaro. Whether it was reviewing our employee benefits or calculating our carbon footprint, no stone was left unturned. Turning over these stones eventually led to a significant change in our corporate governance policies.

“Part of becoming B Corp Certified is accountability, and for Uvaro, this meant rebuilding our corporate governance, which wasn't just a box ticking exercise—it was a catalyst for meaningful change and some real clear 'aha!' moments.” Said Jenna Truong, CFO at Uvaro.

As we’ve mentioned, becoming a B Corp Certified was far more than a company makeover; it was about laying down tracks for a more equitable and responsible future. Truong puts it this way: “The changes we made in our governance weren't just to jump through a hoop to become a Certified B Corporation. They were a conscious decision to embed growth, integrity, and a wider social mission right into the fabric of our business. It’s not just about Uvaro's roadmap, but about charting a course that enriches everyone involved.”
