The Centre for Oil Sands Sustainability is looking to hire current students enrolled in a college or polytechnic for eight months, full time, internship (May-December 2025). University students do not qualify for these positions. The position is located on NAIT main campus. The primary responsibilities of this position will be to assist Senior Researchers and Technologists in the implementation of technology development or verification and validation studies of oil sands related technologies, products or solutions.
The Centre for Energy and Environmental Sustainability (CEES) is located in NAIT's state-of-the art research laboratory in the Productivity and Innovation Centre on NAIT main campus in Edmonton. CEES is staffed by an expert team of applied scientists, engineers and technicians. We bridge the gap between existing energy sector environmental research and real-world solutions, taking innovative ideas from concept to commercialization. We work with business and industry to develop technologies that improve the economic and environmental performance of the oil sands industry.
These positions are lab based with the majority of the work involving a variety of tasks from simple (i.e. weighing solids, cleaning glassware) to complex (i.e. following custom analytical procedures). Task complexity will increase with training & time in role. The work involves long periods of standing on your feet, some medium to heavy lifting, time-sensitive procedures, wearing gloves and other PPE, handling compressed gases, and handling equipment with moving/rotating parts. Receiving training in relevant procedures and techniques is a core component of being a student researcher. Prior experience is not mandatory. A desire to learn, willingness to contribute, and attention to safe laboratory practices are strong assets.
Key Responsibilities:
Learning, providing support on, and then conducting analysis such as, Flocculation, Dean & Stark, Particle Size Distribution, Methylene blue titrations, Ion Chromatography, Karl Fischer Titrations, Solvent extractions, batch extraction testing, Atterberg limits, and vane yield stress.
Preparing chemical solutions for titration and other wet chemistry tests
Acquire and tabulate data and input into Excel
Perform minor calculations
Make, discuss, write up, and present observations to the team
Review hazard assessments and safe work practices for clarity
Maintain lab in good working order including routine housekeeping & maintenance of control charts
Skills & Abilities:
Must have an interest in research and have familiarity with basic solution preparation, weighing and measuring, experimental design and the oil sands industry
Demonstrated comfort with computers and the use of Microsoft Office Applications
Must have good communication skills
Qualifications:
Currently enrolled at NAIT or other community college in one of the following programs or equivalent:
Civil Engineering Technology
Geological Technology
Petroleum Engineering Technology
Chemical Technology
Chemical Engineering Technology
Applicants with education credentials earned outside of Canada should have their credentials evaluated by World Education Services or the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS).
Remuneration: $17.48 - $21.69 per hour, plus 12% in lieu of stat holidays and vacation accrual. (Classification - Student Research Assistant I).
This casual opportunity is covered by the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE) Collective Agreement.
