The team is currently focused on scaling its proprietary cultivation platform and accelerating the commercialization of its sustainable Single Cell Protein (SCP) product, Psomi.DeNova is deeply committed to addressing complex global challenges and developing innovative approaches to enhance the resiliency and sustainability of our global food systems.


Role Overview:

DeNova is seeking an experienced Director of Research & Development (R&D) to lead our R&D team and drive scientific innovation, operational excellence, and strategic advancements in fermentation-based protein production. This role is responsible for developing and executing research strategies, overseeing experimental programs, and ensuring alignment with company objectives. The ideal candidate will be a proven leader with deep expertise in industrial biotechnology, biomanufacturing, or microbial fermentation, capable of guiding a multidisciplinary team toward meaningful breakthroughs.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute R&D strategies in alignment with DeNova’s technical and business objectives.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of scientists, engineers, and lab staff, fostering a collaborative and results-driven culture.
  • Oversee the planning, execution, and optimization of fermentation, bioprocessing, and product development research, from early-stage discovery to commercial implementation.
  • Ensure operational efficiency by improving workflows, optimizing research processes, implementing standard operating procedures (SOPs), and laboratory best practices.
  • Manage departmental budgets, research capital expenditures, and resource allocation to support innovation and growth.
  • Establish and uphold quality, safety, and regulatory compliance standards for all research activities.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including Quality, Pilot Plant, Production, Engineering, and Finance, to align R&D efforts with business and operational goals.
  • Foster strategic partnerships with academic institutions, research organizations, and industry stakeholders to expand DeNova’s collaboration ecosystem.
  • Stay informed on emerging trends and technologies in biotechnology, bioprocessing, and industrial microbiology to drive innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Communicate R&D progress, findings, and strategic recommendations to internal leadership, external partners, and stakeholders, demonstrating both scientific depth and business acumen.

Required Qualifications:

  • PhD or master’s degree in microbiology, biochemical engineering, biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related field with relevant industry experience.
  • 10+ years of progressive industry experience in precision fermentation, industrial microbiology, biotechnology, or biomanufacturing.
  • Proven leadership experience in a commercial R&D setting, including managing teams of scientists, engineers, and research personnel.
  • Experience in scaling research from lab to pilot to commercial scale, including method development, process optimization, and analytical methodologies.
  • Strong operational and strategic mindset, with the ability to align R&D initiatives with business objectives.
  • Hands-on experience with budget management, resource allocation, and capital expenditures for research initiatives
  • Knowledge of regulatory and quality standards relevant to precision fermentation ad biomanufacturing.
  • Exceptional communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in industrial biotechnology, biomanufacturing, or alternative protein production.
  • Familiarity with continuous fermentation, downstream processing, and process scale-up.
  • Strong track record of collaborating with external research partners, regulatory agencies, or funding bodies.
  • Experience with intellectual property strategy and technology transfer.
  • Experience with CFIA, FDA, and EFSA regulatory filings and compliance, with direct experience preparing dossiers or engaging in regulatory approval processes.
  • Strong track record of mentoring and developing scientific talent within an organization.
