Job Description
We are currently looking for a Hydro Superintendent to join our team in a permanent position. Reporting to the Operations Manager, you will be accountable for the safe, efficient, and reliable operations and maintenance of the Sheet Harbour Hydro/ St. Margaret’s Bay Hydro System (293 Malay Falls Rd, Sheet Harbour/ 5548 St. Margaret’s Bay Rd, HWY 3) which includes assets along the Sheet Harbour, Dickie Brook, St. Margaret’s Bay and Fall River Hydro Systems.
As a Hydro Superintendent:
- You will be responsible for the care and upkeep of the Hydro assets through the timely identification and resolution of mechanical, electrical, and structural maintenance issues.
- You must demonstrate your ongoing personal commitment to increased productivity and efficiency gains across Hydro through the Continuous Improvement Process (CIP) and Management Operating System (MOS).
- You will direct effective water management with the goals of protecting public and dam safety, meeting environmental responsibilities, and delivering efficient production.
- You will be responsible for the development and administration of the Sheet Harbour Hydro/ St. Margaret’s Bay Hydro system’s safety program.
- You will be responsible for your personal safety, that of co-workers, and those under your direction by observing and ensuring compliance with all Occupational Health and Safety Rules and Regulations.
- You will ensure that all vehicle, equipment, maintenance, and operating procedures are kept up to date and effectively executed.
- You will be accountable for environmental compliance as it relates to the Hydro Environmental Management System processes and initiatives and be prepared to respond to requests from environmental regulatory organizations.
- You will provide leadership to Nova Scotia Power crews and contractors to complete operating, maintenance, and capital projects, which could be related to equipment life extensions, dam safety or environmental initiatives.
- You will maintain high level of employee morale, commitment, and productivity by training, developing, motivating, and communicating with staff. You will administer NSPI’s Collective Agreement with IBEW Local 1928, ensuring just and consistent interpretation through the service area.
- You will be responsible for effective communication with the public, and all internal and external stakeholder groups, including timely responses to public inquiries.
- You will assist in the preparation of budgets and financial projections and will implement cost control measures as required and directed.
- You will ensure that Nova Scotia Power's long- and short-term business purpose and financial objectives are met.
- You will contribute to overall long term business planning and operations by effectively developing work plans and managing capital and operating budgets.
You recognize yourself in most of the following competencies, and where possible possess the skills and experience listed below:
- University or community college education to the level of technologist or directly equivalent knowledge is required.
- You must have demonstrated communication, organizational and leadership capabilities. You adapt readily to change.
- The successful applicant must be a self-motivated individual who is committed to NSP guiding principles and alignment of goals and objectives for all employees.
- You must possess a valid driver's license, locate your primary residence within an acceptable travel time to the Sheet Harbour Hydro/ St. Margaret’s Bay Hydro site and be available for after hour emergency service restoration.
- You are proficient in the use of computers and have a good working knowledge of work management and scheduling systems.
- Preference will be given to those with leadership or supervisory experience of crews or external contractors.
