Job Description

Backbone is looking for an experienced RF Engineer to join our team! The RF (Radio Frequency) Engineer is responsible for the design, implementation, and optimization of RF systems used in Backbone products. This role requires in-depth knowledge of electrical engineering principles, radio waves, frequencies, signal processing, antennas, system performance, and wireless communication compliance in battery-powered consumer electronic devices. The RF Engineer will work on all Backbone products which contain wireless or which have an impact on wireless performance during the intended use cases (e.g. in close proximity to a mobile phone).

As the RF subject-matter expert, you will define and execute an RF system-level architecture (including electrical, mechanical, and embedded) that supports the company’s vision and performance metrics for wireless performance in Backbone products. You will work cross-functionally with all of the hardware engineering, manufacturing and quality, prototyping and user experience teams to deliver on product specifications related to wireless function and performance.

What You'll Do:

• Design and Development:

  • Design RF systems and components, including antennas, amplifiers, filters, and transmitters.

  • Develop and optimize RF layouts, ensuring that designs meet performance, cost, and quality specifications.

  • Model and simulate RF systems using tools like HFSS, CST, ADS, or MATLAB.

• Testing and Optimization:

  • Conduct RF system testing and performance analysis using test equipment (e.g., spectrum analyzers, network analyzers).

  • Optimize existing RF systems to improve performance, reduce interference, and ensure compliance with industry standards.

  • Perform signal integrity analysis and mitigate interference from other devices or environmental factors.

• Integration and Troubleshooting:

  • Collaborate with other engineers and departments to integrate RF systems into Backbone products.

  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues in RF circuits and communication systems.

  • Support the installation, testing, and deployment of RF systems in the field.

• Regulatory Compliance:

  • Ensure RF designs comply with international and national regulations and standards (e.g., FCC, CE).

  • Prepare and submit documentation required for regulatory approvals.

• Research and Innovation:

  • Stay updated on advancements in RF technology, trends in wireless communication, and emerging standards.

  • Research and prototype new RF technologies and components to enhance communication systems.

• Project Management:

  • Lead and manage RF-related projects, including budgeting, scheduling, and reporting to stakeholders.

  • Provide technical support and mentoring to junior engineers and technicians.

Required Qualifications:

• Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or a related field (Master’s or Ph.D. preferred).

• Experience:

  • 3+ years of experience in RF design, optimization, and testing in wireless communication, satellite, or radar systems.

  • Experience with RF simulation software and test equipment.

• Technical Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of RF circuit design, including power amplifiers, filters, and oscillators.

  • Proficient with RF test and measurement equipment (e.g., spectrum analyzers, vector network analyzers).

  • Understanding of wireless communication standards (e.g., LTE, 5G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth).

  • Knowledge of antenna design and electromagnetic theory.

• Soft Skills:

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with wireless network planning tools (e.g., Atoll, Aircom).

  • Knowledge of software-defined radio (SDR) or cognitive radio technologies.

  • Familiarity with PCB design tools (e.g., Altium, OrCAD).

Working Conditions:

  • May involve working in laboratory environments, field locations, or outdoors for system installations.

  • Occasional travel may be required to international vendor locations.
