Data Engineer

As commonsku’s first Data Engineer, you will design and implement a scalable data warehouse infrastructure to transform our manual, ad-hoc data processes into a repeatable, scalable, and automated infrastructure. You will build foundational elements of our data architecture, including automated ETL processes, centralized datamarts, and integrating data from various sources. Your work will help establish a single source of truth for the company, enabling efficient access to data for cross-functional teams and fostering a data-driven culture. We have a lot of data, and you will help us make the best possible use of it!


You’ll work on:

  • Building and automating ETL pipelines to efficiently extract, transform, and load data from core application database and multiple sources (e.g., Stripe, Heap, HubSpot) into a centralised data warehouse.
  • Defining and implementing the architecture for a scalable, flexible data warehouse that can accommodate growing data volumes and new data sources over time.
  • Developing and maintaining centralized datamarts with well-structured schemas, consistent naming conventions, and optimal query performance.
  • Implementing seamless integrations with various platforms and third-party data sources to consolidate and structure data for analysis and reporting.
  • Supporting consistent data modeling by using tools like dbt (Data Build Tool) to model and test data, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and scalability across datasets.
  • Establishing repeatable processes for data extraction, transformation, and loading, reducing manual data handling and ensuring data is readily accessible.
  • Working closely with cross-functional teams Product, Development, BI, Finance, and more) to understand their data needs and translate those into technical solutions.
  • Ensuring data integrity and governance by implementing best practices for data management, security, and privacy.
  • Documenting all architectural decisions, processes, and models for transparency and ease of maintenance.

With the experience we think will help you succeed:

  • 5+ years of experience in data engineering, with a focus on building scalable data pipelines and warehouse solutions, in a start-up environment
  • Strong experience with ETL processes, data pipeline automation, and integrating data from APIs, databases, and third-party sources.
  • Proficiency with tools like dbt (Data Build Tool) or similar for data modelling, version control, and testing.
  • Extensive experience in architecting data warehouses, including the creation of central datamarts, and maintaining efficient query structures.
  • Expertise in SQL, Python (or similar scripting languages), and cloud-based data platforms (e.g., Snowflake, AWS Redshift, Airbyte, Fivetran, Ninjacat, Google BigQuery,).
  • Experience integrating data from multiple sources like Stripe, Heap, HubSpot, and similar SaaS platforms.
  • Experience in analytics engineering, with a focus on implementing data testing and version control in data pipelines.
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure and orchestration tools such as Airflow, dbt, or similar for building automated workflows.
  • Understanding of data governance best practices, including security, compliance, and data quality frameworks.
  • Prior experience in a SaaS environment or working with high-volume transactional data, particularly in the a start-up environment
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with an ability to translate business needs into technical data solutions.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work closely with cross-functional teams and articulate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
  • Ability to work independently in a small, scrappy, and fast-paced environment, manage multiple priorities, and meet deadlines.

Compensation, Benefits, and Work Environment:

  • This role is open to candidates based in and legally eligible to work in Canada. Our ideal candidate is based in the Toronto area, but we are open to candidates in other parts of Canada as well. (With the exception of Quebec–we love the province, we are not currently in a position to employ folks there.)
  • We believe in paying fairly and being proactive about ensuring our team is rewarded for growth and innovation. The starting compensation range for this role is $125,000 to $145,000 per year, with the initial salary offered based on candidate experience and skill set.
  • We offer benefits coverage for employees, a group RRSP plan with employer contributions, annual office closure between December 25th and January 1st, parental leave top-up, and a flexible work environment that supports individuals, families, and people of diverse needs.
