Position Summary

HLW is searching for a Senior Sustainability Specialist to join our global sustainability studio, BEYOND in our NYC office or LA office. This person will be leading sustainability projects with a focus on rating systems including but not limited to LEED, WELL, WELL H-S, Fitwel, and Zero Carbon. This position is an opportunity for a motivated individual to work hand-in-hand with design teams on both new construction and commercial interiors to influence how projects are designed in order to decarbonize, maximize wellness, and repair ecology. This work will include sustainability and wellness focused project certifications, ESG alignment, and custom sustainability solutions.


Reporting Structure

Position reports to the Global Director of Sustainability and Wellness.


Job Responsibilities

1. General Responsibilities: HLW Knowledge & Understanding

  • Work with internal team to help accomplish goals of the HLW Sustainability Action Plan.
  • As part of HLW’s commitment to AIA 2030, work with all HLW offices to report operational carbon within the DDx.
  • Participate in the HLW internal sustainability group, BEYOND Alliance.

2. Project Related – All Phases

  • Project-specific research (materials, construction, site, water, embodied carbon, biophilic design, and indoor environmental quality).
  • Review of drawings and specifications for compliance with project sustainability goals.
  • Support other BEYOND staff with online portal project administration for all certification system administration (LEED, WELL, WELL Health-Safety, Fitwel, Living Building Challenge, Zero Carbon, etc.) and building analytics using cove tool such as daylight, glare, and embodied carbon.
  • Completion of required documentation (credit templates, narratives, calculations, and online templates).
  • Internal and external team leadership.
  • Respond to quickly changing project schedules and demands.
  • Communicate complex issues and timelines with large project teams.
  • Oversee junior BEYOND team members within project teams while liaising with other members of HLW design studios and business groups in the course of project delivery.
  • Coordinate, lead, and advise large project teams of external consultants.
  • Provide global sustainability support for offices in New York, Los Angeles, New Jersey, Connecticut, Florida, San Francisco, and London.

3. Business Development and Marketing

  • Create sustainability content (blog posts, white papers, articles, updates…) for HLW Blog and HUB.
  • Participate in industry and networking events.
  • Attend industry conferences to represent HLW.
  • Assist in the development of marketing content and graphics.
  • Help develop awards submissions.

4. Role Qualifications

  • Professional degree required in sustainability, architecture, engineering or related discipline.
  • 7-12 years’ experience in sustainability or adjacent and administration experience including LEED Online and the WELL Portal.
  • Three or more professional accreditations (LEED, WELL, Fitwel, LFA, etc.).
  • Strong communication, graphic, and verbal presentation skills.
  • Good time management and attention to detail.
  • Versatility with Bluebeam, Revit, Adobe CS, MS Office.
  • Willingness and/or demonstrated participation in business development.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current sustainability trends and certification platforms.
  • Understanding of mechanical design, construction phases, and rating system portals.

The expected salary range for this position is $90,000 - $105,000. Ultimately, in determining pay, we will consider relevant experience, qualifications, and other job-related factors.
