JOB SUMMARY
The Climate Change and Resiliency Service is responsible for a directed and coordinated approach to implementing the Climate Change Master Plan, Energy Evolution Strategy, the Climate Resiliency Strategy, the Urban Forest Management Plan, and associated priorities, programs, projects, and policies. It will act as a thought leader on climate change issues, responses, emerging technologies, and pilot projects, in partnership with other entities.
You are responsible for developing, planning, implementing, and coordinating wildlife conflict prevention and resolution actions under the Wildlife Strategy including but not limited to coyotes and beavers. As the City’s designated expert and spokesperson on human-wildlife conflict, you provide reports and information regarding wildlife matters to City staff, Council, the public and the media. Finally, you coordinate procurement and contracts with the City’s wildlife service providers.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of a 4 year university degree in Biological Sciences or a college program in natural resource management or similar discipline.
Minimum of 5 years of experience working in a wildlife management capacity, including development and implementation of programs, strategies and responses.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENCES

  • Environmental Professional (EP) certification is an asset.
  • Associate Wildlife Biologist (AWB) certification is an asset.
  • Certified Wildlife Biologist (CWB) certification is an asset.
Must have access to reliable transportation.
KNOWLEDGE
  • Practical experience in the prevention and resolution of human-wildlife conflicts and in the management of urban/suburban wildlife
  • Technical expertise to provide advice and direction on resolution of specific situations, including the use of non-lethal approaches, methods, and tools
  • Organizational and computer skills to establish and maintain a database of wildlife conflict locations and successful management responses, for use in planning and implementation
  • Conflict resolution principles and practices
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers
COMPETENCIES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to speak confidently and credibly regarding wildlife issues and management with the public, Councillors, media
  • Ability to manage multiple projects or initiatives
  • Ability to utilize sound judgement, tact and discretion
  • Organized, analytical and attentive to detail
  • Ability to write comprehensive technical reports in formats conducive to various audiences
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal direction, and collaboratively with others as part of a team
  • Possess computer literacy in MS Office Suite in a Windows environment, including use of the Intranet/Internet
  • Ability to work outside in physically challenging terrain and weather conditions

  • Language Requirement: English oral, reading, writing
  • Experience and formal training combined with demonstrated performance and ability may substitute for stipulated academic requirements.
