Job Description

Position Overview

The Massachusetts Clean Energy Center (MassCEC) is seeking a part time or full time Government Affairs Intern/Fellow for the first half of 2025 (January-June). The Government Affairs fellow will primarily support the research and development of MassCEC’s upcoming legislative priorities, all in support of the Commonwealth’s Clean Energy and Climate Plan.

The Government Affairs fellow will play a collaborative role in supporting the Government Affairs Team. Fellows will have a unique opportunity to contribute to MassCEC’s legislative priorities and research. The fellow will play a key role in helping summarize legislative materials pertaining to MassCEC’s legislative and budget priorities.

The internship program at MassCEC includes various educational and networking opportunities, including:

  • In-depth overview presentations from division heads;
  • Firsthand experience in policy development;
  • MassCEC fellow focused programming;
  • Guided tour of the Wind Technology Testing Center; and
  • Other industry related events and conferences.


Job Duties

  • Work closely with the Senior Director of Government Affairs to support the Government Affairs function.
  • Research, write, develop, and present memos, reports, and other materials on state and federal public policy related to climatetech, clean energy, workforce development, and other related policy areas.
  • Attend relevant events, coalition meetings, legislative hearings and briefings and provide detailed minutes.
  • Updating and maintaining government affairs databases.
  • Work independently to analyze legislative action, and develop effective communication tools (i.e., graphs, charts, tables, etc.)
  • Other duties as assigned.


Position Qualifications

Education:

The candidate will be enrolled in or a recent graduate of an Associates, Bachelor’s, Master’s, or JD program. Relevant majors may include clean energy or climate, public policy, economics, communications, environmental studies, government, public health, or similarly focused major. Candidates from any major with relevant knowledge, skills, and abilities, or lived experiences are encouraged to apply.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with or interest in climatetech and environmental justice issues
  • Familiarity or interest in Massachusetts politics and policy
  • Approaches tasks with strong attention to detail and critical thinking
  • Strong recordkeeping and organizational skills, and willing to work in fast-paced environment on occasion
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work well independently, as well as collaborate within a team setting
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (recommended)


Timing & Location

MassCEC is looking for an intern who can start in January 2025 and continue at least through the end of June 2025 on a full or part time basis. Applicants should be available to work at least 25 hours per week or up to 40 hours per week. The number of hours worked per week may vary over the course of the internship based on the applicant’s schedule and MassCEC’s workload. MassCEC is open to extending the internship after on a part time or full-time basis if there is mutual interest.

MassCEC prefers candidates that are able to start on 1/13/2025 but is open to discussing other starting dates.

MassCEC staff work on a hybrid model: part time in our downtown Boston office and part time remote.


Supervision

The fellow will work under the supervision of Government Relations staff at MassCEC.


Salary

The fellow will earn $20 per hour and be eligible to work for up to 40 hours per week.
