Your opportunity:
Under the Director of Planning, Data & Analysis, the incumbent will be responsible for the advancement and maintenance of the Faculty’s data infrastructure. This will include but not be limited to design, development and optimizing of databases by developing programming communication protocols between systems to automate ETL and data refresh pipelinesand analyzing problems and applying fixes to the non-production and production environments. The incumbent will also be involved in support the Faculty’s machine learning efforts by supporting the creation of training datasets and implementation of models. The incumbent will utilize a variety of coding languages such as python, SQL and java to conduct complex database development, migration and maintenance. The incumbent will utilize software like MS Azure Data Studio, PostgreSQL, MS Azure Data Factory and SPSS to support the Faculty’s data infrastructure. The position will work closely with a number of team members to develop data-driven insights and visualizations in support of Faculty of Arts and Science's strategic and operational objectives. Key focus areas will include scoping and requirements gathering, data management, data analysis, dashboard development and report generation for a variety of audiences, as well as contributions to the database structure, designs, schemas and documentation.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Developing and implementing database testing plans, scenarios and environments
- Assessing and determining methodologies for data retrieval and manipulation
- Analyzing and writing program scripts to extract, reformat and analyze data
- Conducting detailed analysis of system performance to inform management decision making
- Developing database conversion and migration strategies and plans
- Creating complex and technical documentation and user support guides
- Delivering presentations on financial data and models to clients and/or senior management
- Serving as a resource on specific issues to a group of specialists
Essential Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree with a background in statistics, mathematics, computer science or an acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum four (4) years of relevant experience supporting data-driven decision making by conducting detailed data analysis and using large datasets, preferably in a post-secondary education or research-intensive institution.
- Advanced knowledge and experience writing complex SQL queries and procedures.
- Experience in the creation and debugging of databases.
- Strong working and conceptual knowledge and experience of building and maintaining physical and logical data models.
- Experience in automating workflows and monitoring data processes. Demonstrated skills in automating workflows and monitoring data processes.
- Experience with data transformation tools and techniques (e.g., mapping data flows)
- Demonstrate expertise in data modelling and query performance tuning on SQL Server, MySQL, Azure Plate forms. Experience in building and managing data pipelines using AzureData Factory.
- Experience with Business Intelligence tools such as Tableau or Power BI. Experience working with Azure Data Studio and Power BI.
- Excellent knowledge of student information systems or other relational databases.
- Experience supporting machine learning projects, by creating custom training dataset, automating data refresh pipelines and implementing modeling scripts.
- Strong technical skills in understanding of relational databases and ability to create scripts for performing batch uploads and in creating scripted procedures utilizing programming skills in Python, Shell, Java, PHP, and SQL.
- Strong oral and written communications skills to probe for information to establish needs and respond to request, and communicate data query requirements to other data users or Data Analyst.
- Ability to design, build, and maintain the business’s ETL pipeline for data warehouse.
- Ability to resolve performance and data flow issues efficiently.
- Ability to work with subject matter experts to develop new datasets and database schemas
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Ability to make meaningful stories from data.
- Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
- Ability to work well under pressure and meet competing priorities with the highest level of accuracy.

- Experience working with student data in higher education environment.
- Experience developing data visualizations using Tableau dashboards for higher education.

Pay Scale Group & Hiring Zone:
USW Pay Band 12 - $79,874. with an annual step progression to a maximum of $102,147. Pay scale and job class assignment is subject to determination pursuant to the Job Evaluation/Pay Equity Maintenance Protocol.
