A Day in the Life…

Reporting to the Associate Director, Innovation, Commercialization & Partnerships, the Business Development Manager (BDM) plays a pivotal role in the commercialization of innovations, ideas, and inventions created and developed at Brock University. The BDM is responsible for seeking out creations, innovations, and potential intellectual property assets, assessing the commercial potential of IP, creating and implementing commercialization plans, and finding strategic industry partners. The BDM will develop ongoing relationships with researchers at Brock in order to support and enhance the commercialization opportunities and outcomes. As part of the team managing and commercializing the University’s Intellectual Property (IP) portfolio, the BDM is a trusted advisor for the Brock community on all matters of IP and commercialization.

As theBusiness Development Manager, you will:

  • Identify IP assets through establishing relationships with faculty and researchers and determining the commercial potential of their research;
  • Promote, coordinate, and evaluate invention disclosures from faculty researchers;
  • Use knowledge, experience and understanding to assess Brock IP, research and invention disclosures for marketable technology transfer opportunities, considering market, economic, patentability, and legal factors;
  • Conduct primary and secondary market research and analysis of industry and market opportunities;
  • Source, establish, build, liaise, and manage relationships with industry, external partners and other sectors as necessary to promote and further the commercialization of Brock’s IP;
  • Based on the commercialization strategy, identify funding opportunities for the development of Brock IP;
  • Create marketing materials for potential commercial partners and licensees;
  • Ensure IP assets of Brock are commercialized consistent with the University’s IP policies and collective agreements;
  • Negotiate commercial and financial terms for industry partnership commercialization agreements including intellectual property licensing agreements, partnership agreements, material transfer agreements, sponsored research agreements, non-disclosure agreements;
  • Manage portfolio of licensed IP to ensure compliance with legal agreements and payments.

What you need to Succeed…

  • Graduate degree in sciences, engineering, or computer science;
  • Experience in a research, University, or industry environment and experience in technology transfer, commercialization, or knowledge translation role;
  • Understanding of IP and legal issues related to research commercialization within Canada;
  • Knowledge of the University research environment, research policies and trends and the ability to understand scientific inventions and formulate potential applications;
  • Experience with contracts, intellectual property principles, patent and copyright legislation and the ability to comprehend contract and legal terms in technology transfer agreements;
  • Familiarity with diverse technologies and/or scientific fields; and
  • Solid computer skills: including fluency in MS Office, internet searching, and the knowledge and ability to search scientific databases, etc.
  • Marketing and negotiating experience, with demonstrated ability to utilize influence and persuasion.

Preferred or Asset Skills:

  • A professional designation (e.g. MBC, P.Eng, LLB, RTTP, etc.);
  • MBA degree.

Salary and Benefit Information

  • Salary Range: Job Grade M $68,600 - $117,600*
  • Target Hiring Range: $68,600-$85,000
  • This is a 10-month fixed-term contract position.

* The salary range indicated is representative of all positions evaluated at this level. Actual salary is determined by assessing related skills, experience, internal equity and market competitiveness, subject to available budget.
