Overview

Our ESG Advisory team seeks a Senior Advisor, Environmental and Social, to support EDC’s E&S risk assessment and due diligence for projects and non-projects. This advisor will be a key member of the ESG Advisory team, which includes experts in ESIA, stakeholder engagement, climate change, and biodiversity. This role offers an experienced ESIA or ESDD professional the chance to enhance E&S mitigations globally and contribute to EDC’s evolving E&S risk management.

Responsibilities

  • Lead assessments of complex transactions, identifying E&S risks and recommending mitigants.
  • Analyze ESIAs, ESDD reports, monitoring reports, thematic reports, ESAPs, audit reports, consultant terms of reference, RFPs, and E&S policies to ensure alignment with international standards.
  • Manage relationships with diverse stakeholders, including internal and external clients, IFIs, DFIs, ECAs, and consultants.
  • Negotiate E&S commitments in financing and insurance agreements.
  • Advise senior management on E&S issues, providing technical and professional recommendations.
  • Monitor transaction/project performance, resolving non-compliance issues.
  • Guide other E&S Advisors on complex transactions and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Recommend changes to E&S due diligence processes to improve risk management.
  • Provide specialist advice on EDC’s ESG policies, procedures, job aids, and products.
  • Undertake site visits within Canada or internationally (1-6 days, 1-5 times per year).

Screening Criteria

  • University degree in social or environmental science (e.g., International Development, sociology, anthropology, geography, corporate responsibility, ecology, environmental management, or geosciences).
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in ESIA or ESDD in consulting or relevant industry sectors (e.g., mining, oil and gas, power, infrastructure, or renewable energy).
  • Advanced knowledge of ESIA and due diligence principles, frameworks, and standards, including the Equator Principles and IFC Performance Standards.
  • Proven ability to prioritize and meet deadlines in a multitasking environment.
  • Ability to discern, distill, and communicate key issues in complex transactions.
  • Willingness to travel within Canada or internationally for site visits (1-6 days, 1-5 times per year).

Assets

  • Expertise in social or biodiversity impact assessment.
  • Experience as an independent E&S consultant for lenders, private sector companies, or international finance institutions.
  • Experience working with companies in developing countries, preferably in the Indo-Pacific or Latin America.
  • Bilingual in English and French; additional languages pertinent to EDC are a plus.
  • Degree, diploma, or training in Business, Finance, or related disciplines.

Compensation Details:

  • Salaries typically range from $109,810 to $146,413 annually, based on qualifications and experiences.

Location:

  • Export Development Canada is a hybrid work environment.
  • This role may be performed from EDC’s headquarters in Ottawa, or from the Community Hub in Toronto, Mississauga, Montreal, Brossard, or Laval.
