GENERAL SUMMARY:

Clifford Chance US LLP is seeking a full-time Business Development Manager to proactively lead development and implementation of business strategy for Clifford Chance's Tech Group in the Americas and globally. The ideal candidate will be passionate about being part of a growing Tech practice, focused on key areas of Tech law, including AI, intellectual property, technology transactions, digital transformation, data privacy, cybersecurity, Fintech, and other emerging technologies. This role will proactively lead on forward-looking business development strategy across the region and will focus on strategic client opportunities and revenue growth; building profile in the US market; preparation of materials on Tech Group capabilities; training and education of key stakeholders; and key account management. This position will work collaboratively with partners, lawyers, and business professionals in the Americas and globally, taking a central role in a prominent and growing Tech practice, which is a key global strategic priority of the Firm. The role will be fully immersed in overseeing client opportunities in complex, exciting and fast-paced Tech developments in the region and globally, including AI, DLT, data protection and tech transactions. This will include working with various sectors on Fintech, Insurtech, EnergyTech, Healthtech and more. This position will report to the Director, Client and Market Development – Americas but will also work closely under the Global Business Development Lead for the Tech practice. This position can be located in New York, Washington DC or Houston, TX.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and execute Tech practice business strategy in the Americas, working across practices and sectors to determine key areas of focus and priorities for implementation and execution. Liaise with global stakeholders to keep consistency and alignment with the global strategy.
  • Oversee the production, examination and dissemination of detailed client and industry research reports related to initiatives and client meetings.
  • Serve as a strategic advisor to lawyers in the development and implementation of strategic clients; conduct periodic relationship and matter reviews; and organize and deliver value-added services such as client training, and conference sponsorships.
  • Work with stakeholders to identify and pursue new business prospects, including the preparation and coordination of capability statements and pitches, opportunity analysis, outreach, potential client introductions, and the proactive pursuit of additional office and practice introductions.
  • Bolster the market position of the team, including key individuals through identifying opportunities to position and raise profile of key Tech Group partners; collaborating with major industry organizations, conference providers and third parties; organization of client events/seminars (and staffing events where appropriate); submissions for relevant legal directories and awards; leading client communications including newsletters, brochures, contact cards and advertisements, etc.; developing and maintaining content for website and intranet; and assisting with the production and distribution of client briefings and other thought leadership materials.
  • Develop an external communication strategy that helps us effectively articulate and promote the Firm's depth and breadth of technology-related expertise and experience to clients, prospects, and referrers of work. Collaborate with Communications & PR colleagues to identify opportunities to support individual lawyers and public matters that bolster the Tech practice's visibility and reputation via earned media, internal communications and website and intranet content.
  • Develop an internal communication strategy that enhances colleagues' understanding of our strongest selling points in the Americas and encourages higher levels of engagement and contributions to our growth aspirations in and around technology.
  • Ensure Tech-related matters are accurately captured and stored in separate files to allow us to use the data for marketing and business development purposes, as well as directory submissions.

Qualifications


REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCES:

  • Bachelor's degree required; engineering or science degree a plus.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in business development/marketing in a law firm environment preferred.
  • 3+ years of relevant experience in technology-related business development/marketing preferred.
  • A global mindset and perspective, combined with an in-depth knowledge of the US tech market.
  • Ability to develop advisory relationships with partners, lawyers, and other key stakeholders by demonstrating:
    • strong analytical skills and attention to detail;
    • an energetic, proactive and can-do attitude;
    • solid research and pitch-preparation capabilities;
    • ability to work independently and highly organized;
    • a consultative, collaborative approach;
    • ability to work under pressure, multitask and prioritize competing demands, while being detail-oriented;
    • an understanding of our clients' commercial objectives and marketplace;
    • ability to use technologies critical to the position; and
    • excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to contribute to the growth and development of our BD team by:
    • being proactive in gathering information and preparing materials;
    • collaborating with colleagues at all levels and across global offices;
    • demonstrating teamwork and project ownership; and
    • identifying opportunities to develop new processes/improve infrastructure to deliver improved efficiencies for our lawyers.
  • Must possess strong technical proficiency in various software including Microsoft Office, and especially Microsoft PowerPoint.
  • Must be independently legally authorized to work in the United States.

Clifford Chance US LLP offers a comprehensive benefits and compensation package. The salary range for this role is $160,000 to $175,000. Actual salary will be commensurate with the candidate's qualifications and relevant experience.
