Job Description

The employee in this position administers the school bus inspector certification program. The employee surveys school districts to assess the need for regional hands-on testing and administers the hands-on testing to certify inspectors. The employee will also direct updates and revisions to the Florida School Bus Safety Inspection Manual as needed through participation as a member of the Florida Association of Public Transportation (FAPT) School Bus Safety Inspection Committee.


Duties and Responsibilities

The Florida Department of Education (FDOE) has an open position that is responsible for executing the following functions:


This position provides 100% time in organizing, directing, and coordinating staff activities in the following school transportation programs and providing direct services in these programs:

  • Conducts the school bus inspector, train-the-trainer classes, and certifies district's personnel as inspector trainers.
  • Issues Florida School Bus Inspector certificates and testing reports to school district service managers.
  • Reviews school bus inspector applications and documentation for compliance with certification and recertification requirements.
  • Directs the development of school bus specifications through participation as a member of the FAPT School Bus Specifications Committee.
  • Revise and update the Florida School Bus Specifications publication as needed.
  • Provides applicable and relevant information to members of the general public and legislative personnel, school district and department personnel.
  • Provides guidance in oral and written formats, in accordance with the procedures and methods established by the department and bureau within the allocated time frames.
  • Directs the coordination and implementation of the annual school bus pool bid plan and directs the inspection of pilot model school bus bodies and chassis.
  • Assist other staff in the administration of the program to ensure compliance with all applicable rules and statutes.
  • Attendance is an essential function of this position.
  • Perform other tasks and special assignments as assigned

  • Knowledge of School Transportation programs and operations,
  • Knowledge of techniques for planning implementing and/or evaluating transportation programs.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office software, including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Ability to conduct public meetings; write correspondence and technical reports
  • Ability to understand and apply Florida Statutes and FDOE rules and policies

Required Qualifications:

  • Commercial Drivers License (Title 49 CFR, Part 383) with a (P) passenger and a (S) school bus endorsement

Preferred Qualifications

Five (5) or more years of journeyman-level hands-on experience in the field of automotive, medium-heavy truck, transit bus, or school bus mechanical maintenance and repair is required.

Master Certification from the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence or equivalent in one or more of the following or equivalent areas is preferred:

  • Master Automobile Technician
  • Master Medium/Heavy Truck Technician
  • Master Transit Bus Technician
  • Master School Bus Technician

LEAVE INFORMATION:

    • Annual Leave - All full-time Career Service employees filling established positions earn annual leave in varying increments dependent upon years of creditable service. Employees with up to 5 years of creditable service earn 8.667 hours per month, with 5 to 10 years earn 10.833 hours per month and those with over 10 years of service earn 13 hours per month.
