Job Description

Job Title: Computer Science Instructional Fellow

SUMMARY

EOYDC’s mission is to nurture the holistic development of youth from kindergarten into adulthood so that they can live a life of prosperity, integrity, and purpose.

Computer Science (CS) Instructional Fellows are leadership roles that provide aspiring educators an opportunity to enhance their teaching skills and gain more experience serving youth. This fellowship is designed for fellows to learn best practices for working with and instructing middle school students. Further, this program helps fellows establish their career plans post-fellowship, while also gaining the experience and skill sets required to be successful in future direct-service opportunities with young people. Ultimately, the goal of this program is to provide young adults who are heavily considering a career in ECE, elementary or middle school teaching, and/or youth development to gain the skills and experience needed to be attractive to future employers in the education/youth-serving sector.

Participants of this fellowship can expect to learn the following:

  • CS instruction for middle school (6-rising 9th grade) students
  • Culturally-sustaining/asset-based pedagogical approaches
  • Trauma-informed, healing-centered
  • Cognitive development
  • Curriculum development and lesson planning
  • Classroom management
  • Efficient supply prep and ordering processes

All fellows must be available for training provided by the Silicon Valley Educational Foundation (SVEF) on the following days:

  • May 4 (in-person)*
  • May 9 (virtual)*
  • May 14 (virtual)*
  • May 18 (in-person)*

Other required training, led by EOYDC, will take place from May 20-June 7, 2024 (excluding weekends).

In addition to training requirements, all fellows will have the following expectations/responsibilities:

Teaching Responsibilities

  • Available to be the primary adult present and lead classes for a middle school students up to 4 hours per day
  • Available for additional training and development--after instructional hours--up to 4 hours per day
  • Use innovative methods to instruct the class
  • Inform Bridge Manager of the materials needed for each class/activity in a timely

manner

Student Engagement

  • Engage and form meaningful relationships with students that fosters trust and sense of care
  • Supervise children and promote safety and respect amongst all participants
  • Attend and support field trips & special events
  • Provide students with direct support to promote emotional/psychological health and

development

Classroom Climate/Management

  • Treat all students with respect and dignity
  • Cultivate a class culture of joy, fun, inquisitiveness, and respect
  • Reinforce program policies and procedures through role modeling and coaching students

and interns

  • Utilize behavior management techniques and trauma-informed approaches to

resolving conflict/issues within the classroom

QUALIFICATIONS

Education and/or experience equivalent to:

  • These fellows will have had at least two (2) years of experience working directly with young

people in a formal setting prior to this fellowship

  • Be in at least their second year of college or actively attending/recently completed an

academic certificated program

  • Participation in/completion of a specialized program and/or pursuing a certification or

degree in education, child development, or a related field

  • Demonstrated commitment to serving systematically marginalized communities with

dignity and respect

  • Ability to teach classes of up to 20 elementary-aged students at a time
  • Must be patient, flexible, responsible, and enjoy being with students
  • Must be available to work a minimum of 40 hours per week, including on-site during

regular program hours

  • Non-profit experience preferred
  • Non-profit, data collection, and staff management experience preferred
  • Bilingual Spanish/English a plus.
  • A proven proficiency in one or more of the subject areas taught in the program

COMPENSATION

As part of their participation, all fellows are offered a stipend, which is disbursed in increments throughout the summer. Each fellow will receive their stipend upon completing certain milestones at designated points of the summer, which will be outlined in their agreement letter. Fellows may earn up to a total of $10,000 over the course of the summer.

COVID-19 SAFETY REQUIREMENTS

All EOYDC staff are required to provide a negative COVID-19 test result prior to starting onsite work and must be retested monthly. All approved time and expenses associated with testing required by EOYDC are compensated. New hires will participate in virtual training while awaiting test results. Staff (and all parties entering EOYDC’s building) must answer health screening questions, receive a temperature check, and sanitize their hands prior to entering the building. Face masks provided by EOYDC must be worn by all parties in the building at all times.
