We are currently looking for an Environmental Regulatory Consultant (12 month contract) at our Corporate Offices in Ajax, ON
The Environmental Regulatory Consultant is responsible for fulfillment of various Volkswagen Group Canada (VGCA) compliance obligations with federal and provincial governments which currently include electric vehicle mandates, stewardship and extended producer responsibility.
The successful candidate will regularly collaborate with Volkswagen Group of America (VWGoA) to ensure their timely reporting of Canadian fleet emissions reports (greenhouse gas and tailpipe). They will be responsible for supporting the implementation and rollout in Canada of new global management systems (Environmental Compliance and Product Compliance). In addition, they will represent VGCA in government consultations and trade association meetings regarding technical regulation of vehicles and pro-actively assessing regulatory developments in Canada and briefing local and global stakeholders on compliance-readiness and monitoring.
**This is a hybrid flex position.**
Responsibilities:
Compliance Reporting:
Fulfill, in an accurate and timely manner, reporting obligations regarding:
- Zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) sales mandates
- Fulfill reporting obligations pertaining to 30+ provincial extended producer responsibility (EPR)/stewardship requirements (e.g. oil filters, antifreeze, paints, batteries, tires, etc.) and track/pay remittances, as applicable
- Co-ordinate multi-eye reviews of regulatory filings
- Support internal or external audits on federal/provincial regulatory matters
- Material and chemical conformity
- Fleet emissions (greenhouse gas and tailpipe) via VWGoA
Compliance Monitoring
- Canadian liaison on emissions topics within Volkswagen Group network [represent Canadian market in regulatory exchange workshops, interpretation and monitoring of compliance obligations]. This is a Group function supporting all relevant brands of the Volkswagen Group (Volkswagen, Audi, Lamborghini, Bentley, Bugatti, and Ducati)
- Support global stakeholders in North American Region/Germany regarding fleet emissions compliance (greenhouse gas and tailpipe pollutants)
- Responsible for short-term compliance monitoring [ZEV mandates]
Regulatory Monitoring and Steering
- Monitor regulatory development in the Canadian automotive sector, focusing on various environmental topics
- Serve as regulatory co-ordinator for defined topics and communicate legislative and regulatory changes to various stakeholders within the VW Group organization in a concise, easy-to-understand manner
- Maintain Binding Obligations Register for the company (i.e. database of applicable federal/provincial regulations) relevant to defined topics
- Represent VGCA in trade association committees
- Represent VGCA in industry consultations and technical working groups chaired by Canadian federal and provincial policymakers
Research and Data Analytics
- Support environmental compliance research and collect/analyze engineering and market data trends, as required
- Collect and maintain volume data relevant to regulatory reports and audits
Support Product Launch milestones
- Monitor emissions certification status for Volkswagen Group Canada (VGCA) product portfolio
- Qualify zero emissions vehicles for government rebates and/or green plates
Corporate Sustainability
- Support corporate sustainability program including key KPIs such as increasing electric vehicle share, reducing our corporate carbon footprint and promoting the build-out and awareness of the zero emissions vehicle ecosystem
Bridge-Builder
- Build and maintain good relationships across Volkswagen Group network. They will maintain a Canadian lens while establishing and continuously improving processes with global partners
- Collaborate with trade association and all layers of government to support informed and sound policy-making

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Applied Science/Engineering or Chemistry/Life Science equivalent and/or 3+ years of equivalent working experience
- Experience with administering chemicals management regulations and/or emissions regulations under Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999
- Experience with administering provincial stewardship and extended producer responsibility requirements
- Logical and ethical – demonstrates integrity

- Experience reading and interpreting Canadian legislation and regulation
- Understanding of Canadian regulatory processes
- Familiar with risk management and automotive industry regulatory landscape
- Bilingual [English/French] considered an asset
