How you will contribute as part of the TRCA team:
The Technical Analyst is responsible for providing technical knowledge and support with regards to monitoring, analysis, data collection, and writing. This position collaborates with TRCA teams to prepare reports and other materials for internal and external stakeholder related engagement.

The Sustainable Technologies Evaluation Program (STEP) was established by TRCA in 2004. STEP is a multi-agency initiative developed to support broader implementation of sustainable technologies and practices within a Canadian context. STEP works to achieve this overarching objective by:

  • Carrying out research, monitoring and evaluation of clean water and low carbon technologies;
  • Assessing technology implementation barriers and opportunities;
  • Developing supporting tools, guidelines and policies;
  • Delivering education and training programs;
  • Advocating for effective sustainable technologies; and
  • Collaborating with academic and industry partners through our Living Labs and other initiatives.
Technologies evaluated under STEP are not limited to physical devices or products; they may also include preventative measures, implementation protocols, alternative urban site designs, and other innovative practices that help create more sustainable and liveable communities.

Major Responsibilities:
  • Organizes, manages databases, and conducts quality control checks on monitoring or assessment data, ensuring quality control and assurance measures are followed at all times during research and analysis processes
  • Collaborates with teams to collect, compile, and analyze a range of ecological, green infrastructure, and climate science research topics
  • Prepares data summaries, including basic GIS, statistical or trend analysis and interpretation of data.
  • Assists with evaluation of survey and geoscience needs for projects
  • Interfaces with internal project teams and provides technical guidance to those teams
  • Implements survey techniques that aim to reduce uncertainty and bias in data collection where possible
  • Coordinates the collection of data and assesses the need for data collection to support complex research projects Conducts geo-spatial assessments, compiling, analyzing, and reporting on a variety of data sets as required
  • Collects, organizes, and executes data collection and management of data
  • Conducts regular monitoring exercises preparing technical reports in support of project priorities, logs photographs and relevant measurements
  • Utilizes digital field collection methods that increase efficiency of field work (e.g., ArcGIS Survey 123)
  • Supports the preparation of technical reports and decision support tools while communicating the findings to a variety of internal and external audiences
  • Supports the preparation of presentations for stakeholder-related and other public speaking events, creates data visualizations and other supports enabling audience understanding of the information
What will you need to succeed:
Education (degree/diploma/certifications/licenses)
  • University degree in Biology, Geography, Environmental Science, Climate Science, Environmental Studies, Physical Sciences, Water Resources, or a related field
  • Valid Ontario Class G2 driver’s license
Experience
  • 2 + years of experience in environmental, climate science, or engineering research and/or data analysis
Knowledge/Skill/Ability - Competencies
  • Working knowledge and understanding of urban sustainability in a retrofit context
  • General knowledge of environmental benefits of tree planting, energy and water conservation and lot level stormwater management
  • Ability to review a data set, identify anomalies in the information and develop methods of analyzing the data
  • Able to write persuasive or compelling content for the purpose of generating positive responses or heightened interest by others
  • Ability to make sound and effective decisions under pressure
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite including online software such as MS teams, WebEx, and SharePoint; advanced MS Excel capabilities for analysis, data visualization
  • Ability to conduct statistical and spatial analysis using relevant software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, R software, Python)
