About the Department:
The Information Technology Services Department is responsible for enterprise technology operations for the City of Alexandria. ITS provides technology services and solutions to City departments to enhance service delivery. ITS aligns its work with City needs by providing leadership, resources, expertise, and products that enable departments to better serve the City’s residents, businesses, and visitors. ITS resources support initiatives funded through the multi-year Information Technology Capital Improvement Plan (IT/CIP) to improve the overall technology landscape. The City of Alexandria’s ITS Department has been a Top Ten National Finalist in the Digital Cities Award program for over the past 19 years.
Position Summary:
The Department of Information Technology Services (ITS) is seeking a Network Engineer I in the Network Operations Division. The Network Engineer I is an entry-level position responsible for supporting the day-to-day operations of the organization's network infrastructure. This role involves assisting with the installation, configuration, and maintenance of network devices, troubleshooting basic network issues, and working under the guidance of more senior network engineers. The ideal candidate should have a foundational understanding of networking concepts, a willingness to learn, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Daily Monitoring:
- Use network monitoring tools to check the status and health of network devices and connections, ensuring that all systems are operational.
- Review network logs to identify any anomalies or signs of potential issues, such as packet loss, latency spikes, or unusual traffic patterns.
- Assist in responding to alerts from monitoring systems, working with senior engineers to address any immediate concerns.

Basic Troubleshooting:
- Address common network connectivity issues, such as troubleshooting wired and wireless connections, resolving IP conflicts, and assisting users with VPN connections.
- Utilize basic network diagnostic tools, such as ping, traceroute, and nslookup, to identify the source of network problems.
- Document troubleshooting steps and resolutions for recurring issues, contributing to the knowledge base for future reference.

- Act as the first point of contact for network-related support requests, responding to helpdesk tickets and resolving issues in a timely manner.
- Assist users with network access issues, such as connecting to Wi-Fi, accessing shared drives, or using remote access tools.
- Provide clear communication to users about the status of their issues, expected resolution times, and any necessary follow-up actions.

- Assist senior engineers in configuring network devices, such as setting up VLANs, assigning IP addresses, and configuring basic routing protocols.
- Follow established templates and procedures to ensure that devices are configured consistently and according to company standards.
- Perform basic configuration tasks independently, which include but is not limited to the following: setting up new wireless access points, configuring ports on network switches, networking UPS devices, etc.

- Participate in the physical setup of network infrastructure, including running and terminating Ethernet cables, organizing patch panels, and labeling cables for easy identification.
- Ensure that network cables are properly routed and secured to prevent damage and maintain a clean and organized wiring closet or data center.
- Assist with the installation of network racks, servers, and other hardware, ensuring that all equipment is properly connected and powered.

Minimum & Additional Requirements
Two-Year College Degree; at least three years of experience in performing systems programming work in a mainframe, LAN or WAN environment, or performing equivalent work in a related field; and completion of college-level courses in computer science, business administration or a related field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience: 0-2 years of experience in network engineering, IT support, or a related field.
- Certifications: Basic networking certifications such as CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCENT, or equivalent are preferred.
