The 52-year-old Chicano Studies Program at CSU-Pueblo is one of the oldest Chicano/a Studies programs in the State of Colorado. The Chicano/a Studies minor complements majors and careers in law, sociology, social work, fine art, education, Native American studies, and other disciplines.

The Interdisciplinary approach to the Chicano/a Studies minor emphasizes history, fine art, political science, cultural practice, and selected courses to provide the student with an in-depth knowledge of specific aspects of the Chicano/a experience, history and community. The Chicano Studies program is based in The College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (CHASS) which offers students opportunities to become ethical, socially responsible, engaged learners who are prepared to assume leadership in a dynamic global context. CHASS offers 34 bachelor's degrees, 19 emphasis areas, 27 minors and a Master of Social Work (MSW). CHASS is also home to nearly 70% of the university-wide general education courses, including the majority of courses in written communication, humanities, history and social sciences.

The Aztlán Research Center works closely with the Chicano/a Studies program to support the development of research and public programing that will impact the region and advance knowledge related to the region’s Chicanx, Latinx, Indigenous Peoples and Environments of the southwestern US.

Description of Job

CSU Pueblo Chicano/a Studies Program seeks qualified applicants for a tenure- track Assistant Professor in Chicano Studies /Director of the Aztlán Research Center. We especially welcome interdisciplinary Chicano/a Studies scholars who specialize in Indigenous Studies, borderland studies and/or decolonial intersectional scholarship with a strong record of peer reviewed scholarship, teaching, mentorship, and community engagement. This position will work with Chicano Studies Coordinator to expand the Chicano Studies curriculum at CSU Pueblo. We seek applicants with a documented record of successful engagement with Chicano/a/x, Latinx, and or Indigenous communities through service, teaching and or scholarship.

This full-time tenure-track position involves teaching, administrative duties, service to the university, and developing peer-reviewed scholarship. Administrative duties will be in the fall and spring, with possible summer responsibilities as Director of the Aztlán Research Center. The center collaborates with the Chicano/a Studies program to support research and public programming that impacts the region and advances knowledge related to Chicanx, Latinx, Indigenous Peoples, and environments of the southwestern US.

Primary Duties
Provides excellence in teaching courses in the Chicano/a Studies Program. Provides leadership in the teaching and development of Chicano/a Studies courses.

Director of Aztlan Center. Director will manage all aspects of the Center under the leadership of the Library’s Dean. Duties include the following. Develop or revise the mission, policies, and procedures for the Center. Collaborate with CSU Pueblo faculty and community members to develop an intentional research agenda for the Center. Award research stipends to CSU Pueblo faculty and community members. Plan community outreach programs. Collaborate with the University Archivist to support research resulting in new collections for the Colorado Chicano Movement Archives. Work with the Chicano Studies coordinate to identify research and public program themes. Work with Chicano Studies coordinator and faculty to increase student participation in Chicano Studies courses. Plan and manage the annual Summer Institute.

Service includes but is not limited to:

  • Contributes to student success through advising, support and mentoring undergraduate CS minors. Schedules office hours to meet advising responsibilities and encourage improved student performance in classes. Assists students in setting academic goals, maintaining a record of advisement, and providing referrals to appropriate student services. Attends and takes part in meetings of the associated departments, school, college, and university. Serves if elected or appointed with their consent to University boards or estate committees. Attends campus meetings and University functions including Commencement.
  • Actively engages in curriculum development and revision, and the recruitment of prospective students
Maintains a developing record of peer reviewed scholarship commensurate with the level of rank, and a clear indication of the potential to achieve nationally and internationally recognized standards of excellence.

Salary Range
$62,000-$65,000

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in Chicano Studies or related discipline in the Humanities, Arts, or Social Sciences
  • A documented record demonstrating an ability to work with Chicano Studies stakeholders within university and community.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the significance of Chicano/a studies as an academic endeavor.
  • Ability to engage larger national Chicano/a Studies scholar community
  • A record within the last 5-years documenting peer-reviewed Interdisciplinary Chicano/a Studies scholarship.
  • Experience creating academic and or community programming in collaboration with Chicano/a, Latinx, and or Indigenous communities within the last 5 years.
  • Minimum of 1 year of higher education teaching in Chicano Studies or related field.
Preferred Qualifications
  • A record of peer reviewed scholarship in Chicano Studies including Indigenous Studies, borderland studies and/or decolonial intersectional scholarship practice.
  • Ability to develop courses in Chicano Studies, Indigenous Studies, borderland studies and/or decolonial centered courses.
  • Peer review record of engagement with Interdisciplinary Chicano/a Studies scholarship that specializes in Indigenous Studies, borderland studies and/or decolonial intersectional scholarship practice.
  • A positive record of higher education teaching in Chicano Studies or Indigenous Studies, borderland studies and/or decolonial teaching practice over the last five years.
