How You’ll Add Value
Under the general supervision of the Environmental, Health, & Safety Manager, the EHS Specialist will support the development, implementation, training, and maintenance of the various programs necessary to ensure a safety and healthy environment for employees, contractors, visitors, and the community. The EHS Specialist will also assist with protecting the company against losses, ensuring that operations are in compliance with company policies and standards, and applicable local, nationally recognized standards of best practices, and state and federal occupational safety and environmental requirements. This position is also responsible for providing guidance, support and implementing the company’s comprehensive environmental, health and safety program.
What You’ll Do
- Continuous improvement of an effective Environmental, Health, and Safety program.
- May interact with various local, state, and federal agencies such as OSHA, EPA, Insurance carriers, Local Fire/Police, and many others for permitting and inspection requirements.
- Ensure compliance with all environmental and health regulations, as well as keeping abreast of any changes to laws and regulations that potentially impact the organization.
- Coordinate all aspects of resource use, pollution reduction, waste management, environmental health, risk assessment and employee involvement.
- Be responsible for identifying and remediating hazardous workplace conditions at multiple facilities.
- Develop a strong working knowledge of standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the organization.
- Be an active member of the local and corporate Safety Committees each month and coordinate with members to complete action items.
- Train employees on company policies and regulations pertaining to employee safety in conjunction with Human Resources such as Bloodborne Pathogens, Hazard Communication, Cryogenic Safety, LOTO, etc.
- Conduct regular safety walks and follow-up meetings for operations and facilities areas.
- Manage numerous waste streams in the various buildings to ensure safe and proper disposal of waste through licensed contractors.
- Coordination of outside safety services for prescription safety glasses, safety shoes, specialized safety trainings.
- Create and maintain listings of approved PPE items and suppliers to assure safety and cost control.
- Improve energy consumption practices to reduce costs and lessen the company's environmental impact.
- Coordinate and schedule waste pickups with licensed services on a monthly basis.

Prepare, revise, update and perform environmental, health, and safety training in the areas of:
- Bloodborne Pathogens
- Hazard Communication
- Chemical Hygiene
- PPE use and maintenance
- GHS labeling
- Other occupational/environmental safety related topics
- Other duties as assigned.
What You Will Bring
- Bachelor's degree in an Environmental, Health, or Safety field, plus 3-5 years related experience (preferably in a Laboratory or Research and Development setting).
- Professional certification in Safety, Industrial Hygiene or Environmental area a plus.
- Knowledge of basic state/country EHS regulations.
- Familiarity with EHS hazard and risk identification, evaluation and control concepts.
- Demonstrates high level of initiative and ability to work independently.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with significant presentation experience.
- Travel requirements – less than 10%.
- Occasional overtime and weekend work may be required.

- Ability to work with refrigerants (e.g., dry ice and LN2) using proper PPE
Your Working Conditions:
- Employee may occasionally work in an area with potentially infectious materials.
- Employee may occasionally enter walk-in freezers and other cold environments for short periods.
- Employee will be responsible for maintaining a clean work environment and enforcing and following Universal Precautions for bloodborne pathogens when working in an area considered to be potentially contaminated.
