Position Summary

The Recreation Director is responsible for the vision, program facilitation, and daily operations of the Recreation Department. The Director will lead program development and implementation, staffing, recruitment, employee development, training, sales, financial management, facilities management, and extensive member interaction.

The Director is part of the JCC Leadership and Supervision Team, connecting Recreation programs to the JCC through participation in supervisory trainings, staff communication meetings, leadership meetings, and program team meetings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Direct Supervision
  • Supervise Recreation Department staff, including day-to-day management, weekly individual supervision meetings, co-led weekly team program meetings alongside the Aquatics Director, professional development opportunities, and performance review/management.
  • Hire, train, and develop staff, completing appropriate paperwork for new hire, rehire, change, or termination, and providing to HR team in a timely fashion.
  • Lead ongoing training, including but not limited to staff in-services, professional development, CPR/AED/First Aid classes, birthday party training, camp training, etc.
  • Interact with employees in a positive and professional manner, documenting all necessary interactions and relative information.
  • Complete initial and annual reviews of direct reports and other designated department staff.
  • Understand and adhere to all JCC Policies and Procedures.
  • Programming
  • Ensure that consistent, high-quality programming is developed and provided in the following areas:
  • Parent Child Classes
  • Pre-school and Youth Sports Classes
  • Pre-school and Youth Enrichment Classes
  • Youth Sports Leagues (Temkin)
  • Adult Recreation Classes and programs
  • Adult Sports Leagues
  • Pickleball
  • JCC Maccabi MKE – Wisconsin Delegation
  • JCC Birthday Parties
  • Develop and implement summer camp programming to participants ages K5-8th grade, including but not limited to:
  • Program development and curriculum planning
  • Staff recruitment and training
  • Marketing and promotion
  • Ensure that camps and programs comply with all state licensing guidelines.
  • Ensure a high quality of summer camp programs.
  • Work in collaboration with the Marketing Department to ensure that Program Journal information is submitted, and that programs are promoted to achieve enrollment goals.
  • Develop new programming that meets the needs of our members and community.
  • Ensure that the highest level of communication with members and program users is achieved through active staff supervision and mentorship.
  • Partnerships
  • Ensure that accurate, up-to-date schedules are posted and shared on The JCC’s website.
  • Manage internal partners’ needs for space, including but not limited to: Gan Ami, Wellness 360, Kids Center, Chaverim, and Fitness.
  • Manage external partners’ needs for space, including but not limited to: BBYO, WITS, Froedtert, MJDS, Ability Center, Birthday Parties, Gym Space Rentals.
  • Execute contracts and invoices for gym rentals and ensure that billing is completed in a timely manner.
  • Budgets & Financials
  • Develop annual budget for Recreation and Maccabi Wisconsin Delegation.
  • Present budgets during annual budget meeting.
  • Monitor monthly financial reports and communicate questions or concerns by established deadline.
  • Develop annual enrollment and revenue goals for each program area.
  • Maintain awareness of revenue for all Recreation programs and the ways in which they impact overall yearly budgets.
  • Assist in the development of a sales plan for all Recreation areas.
  • Manage monthly Recreation credit card statements and ensure that all direct reports have submitted their information on time.
  • Oversee the credit card purchases and invoices for each respective department and ensure that purchasing aligns with budgets.
  • Fulfilling Endowment intentions through appropriate programming
  • Maccabi Wisconsin Delegation
  • Work with Marketing Department to actively promote the JCC Maccabi Games.
  • Recruit athletes to fill all allotted spots.
  • Host opportunities for Wisconsin athletes to connect with one another.
  • Serve as Delegation Head and attend all meetings and events.
  • Ensure the safety of all Maccabi Participants during the Games.
  • Direct Service
  • Teach or facilitate any Recreation program/class/league as needed, which may include evenings and weekends.
  • Assume weekly, weekend, and holiday MOD (Manager on Duty) shifts, as required.
  • Additional Responsibilities
  • Assume responsibilities for JCC special events, as required.
  • Promote and practice the JCC’s Positive Rules of Communication.
  • Participate in supervisory training and professional development sessions, as required.
  • Adhere to and ensure that the Senior Program Director is apprised of any concerns, challenges, or other potential impacts to the JCC.
  • Perform other duties and execute additional responsibilities, as required.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Requirements (KSA’s)

  • Demonstrated track record of managing sales, operations, group programming, and customer service of a Recreation facility.
  • Demonstrated track record of careful planning and preparation for programs and events.
  • Demonstrated understanding of Recreation programs designed for participants beginning at 6 months old.
  • Ability to identify problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to promote high standards of program delivery and professional excellence.
  • Ability to respond effectively to constructive criticism and provide constructive feedback to staff.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with computer software: including MS Office Suite: Word, Excel, Publisher, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated effective written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills; customer service orientation with specific strength in diplomacy and discretion strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively, both independently and as part of a team, with other staff members, JCC members, and community members.

Education and/or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience of management in the Recreation industry.
  • Red Cross certified lifeguard preferred.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED preferred.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be frequently required to stand, walk; use hands to handle or touch objects, tools, or controls; talk or hear; and taste or smell. The employee will be occasionally required to sit; reach above shoulders; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

  • Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts.
  • Indoors and outdoors – may include extreme weather conditions.
  • Occasionally loud.
  • Flexible schedule – may include extended workdays, weekends, and holidays.
