Job Description

The Lansing Board of Water & Light has an opening for an Administrator, Corporate Sustainability with our Strategic Planning & Development team, located in Lansing, MI.

Job Type: Full-Time
Starting Salary Range: $91,746. - $111,930.
Position Summary:
Responsible for leading the organization’s corporate social responsibility program, directing overall development and implementation of corporate social responsibility program initiatives. The position is responsible for managing and coordinating activities of the organization and within the community, developing programming and policies to achieve corporate social responsibility, climate resilience, sustainability, good governance and environmental goals of the organization, tracking and communicating progress towards goals, and advising on relevant issues and topics. This position reports directly to the Director of Strategic Planning and Development.
Essential Functions:
  • Leads the overall development, implementation and management of corporate sustainability, climate resilience, sustainability, good governance and environmental goals.
  • Fosters a culture of resiliency and sustainability throughout the organization and community.
  • Collaborates with governments, institutions, community groups, and other stakeholders on creating, developing, and implementing overall program principles, strategies, and actions.
  • Represents the Board in discussions with external stakeholders regarding corporate social responsibility program efforts.
  • Manages and oversees tracking, reporting, and communication of organizational and community-wide progress toward corporate social responsibility goals; develops performance indicators and progress benchmarks.
  • Develops and recommends programming and policy modifications to align with organizational goals.
  • Research, reports, and develops training and presentations on relevant areas and topics.
  • Develops and manages budgets of administering programs and projects.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required and assigned.
  • Researches and applies for applicable awards and recognitions.
  • Aids in the research, development, and administration of grant-funded projects.
  • Serves in an advisory capacity on committees, teams, and boards.
  • Expected to comply with all BWL policies and work rules.
  • Predictable and reliable attendance.
  • Performs other duties and projects as assigned.
Job Specifications:
Required:
  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Environmental Engineer, Sustainability, Business Administration, Urban Planning, Energy Engineer, or equivalent proven from a combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of 10 years of professional experience required in research, planning, developing, implementation, and oversight of environmental stewardship, sustainability, and social responsibility program management, or related experience. Master’s in a related field with seven to ten years of experience would be equivalent; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of sustainability frameworks used to effectively meet goals.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of community engagement practices and principles to develop plans, programs, and policies, centering disadvantaged communities.
  • Perform professional level planning work, including project development, implementation, and management, cultivating transparent and accountable systems and processes to reach goals.
  • Knowledge of public administration and policy-making bodies that are responsible for or influence sustainability and social responsibility efforts.
  • Building and maintaining effective and trusted relationships with peers, key stakeholders and decision-makers.
  • Interpreting, applying and explaining complex policies, regulations, and practices.
  • Setting priorities, coordinating multiple, complex projects and meeting critical deadlines.
  • Use of sound and independent judgment.
  • Development and administration of grant-funded projects.
  • Exceptionally strong analytical, organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to manage own work and appointments while working independently towards deadlines.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication.
  • Displays strong emotional intelligence.
  • Trusted to work with a high-level of independence, without significant oversight and with appropriate level of decision-making.
  • Must have valid MI driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
Preferred:
  • PROSCI Certified Change Practitioner.
  • Additional certifications or credentials, such as LEED, Envision Sustainability Professional (ISI ENV SP), Certified Climate Change Professional (CC-P), International Society of Sustainability Professionals (ISSP), or similar
  • Professional memberships and/or board appointments relating to corporate social responsibility, climate resilience, sustainability, good governance and environmental stewardship, or similar.
  • Master of Science, Public Administration, or other advanced degree relating to corporate social responsibility, climate resilience, sustainability, good governance and environmental stewardship, or similar.
  • Relevant legislation, standards, and practices impacting BWL’s sustainability and social responsibility efforts.
  • Principles, strategies, and actions of federal, state, and local sustainability and social responsibility efforts impacting BWL.
Physical Requirements / Working Conditions:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Must be able to remain in a stationary position for the majority of the working day. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office environment including the use of stairs. Constantly operates a computer, and other office equipment. Ability to adjust focus, especially due to concentration on a computer screen. Must communicate frequently with other departments and employees both verbally and in writing. May need to lift and carry up to 30 pounds and/or position the body to reach items on the floor/below knee level or reach overhead. The person in this position needs to occasionally move about in industrial environments, and uneven terrain. Occasional on-call and after-hours work may be required to address environmental emergencies. May be required to recognize small numbers, letters, symbols, colors on prints, and/or operate field instruments/equipment.
Works in temperature-controlled office environment, with occasional work in outdoor weather conditions, and in industrial environments.
Must successfully complete a background check, a substance screening and a physical (if applicable).
