Job Description

We are Salish Elements, an Indigenous owned green hydrogen development company, making a reliable green hydrogen fuel supply network a reality in British Columbia. We are constructing our first green hydrogen production facility, and we need your help. Salish Elements is building an in-house engineering team to complete the Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) and detailed engineering of a 25MW green hydrogen production facility in British Columbia as well as take on additional work as the company grows.

The facility is a first-of-its-kind Indigenous owned electrolytic hydrogen plant near Lillooet, B.C in the territory of the Xaxli’p community, who are part of St'át'imc Nation.

What you can expect working for Salish Elements:

Hybrid working environment: Work from home, office and offsite. Work would be completed 50 percent in the North Vancouver office and 50 percent in various locations across B.C.

Independence in role: We are in the early stages of building our internal team and company culture. Take part in establishing and being part of a working community where your voice isn’t just heard but is also an integral part of our operations.

Flexible time off: We work when there is work to do and do not search for busy work. We strive to provide an environment that encourages work-life balance.

A great mission and vision: to be an example of the way business can be done in British Columbia by respecting the land and people connected to a development project in tangible, real life ways. You can be part of social change for the better, just by doing what you do best as an engineering expert.

Competitive salaries and benefits: We understand the need for solid wages and health care coverage. Rent in B.C. is not cheap. Working for positive social impact and positive change does not mean you need to sacrifice good pay. When combined with a healthy work-life balance, our pay will compete and beat other career opportunities.

Qualified candidates will have professional licensing as engineers (P. Eng) for engineering positions or Project Management in Canada, some experience in the energy industry and gas plants, a real desire to bring green hydrogen technologies forward to everyday life and be excited to think creatively to implement engineering solutions in integrated ways with sustainable construction.

Successful candidates will provide a resume or CV demonstrating position-relevant experience with references.

Position Summary:

The Senior Process Engineer will be responsible for managing the overall process development of the green hydrogen production facility and related projects. You will oversee the entire process design, from the conceptual phase through to commissioning, ensuring the systems are efficient, scalable, and cost-effective. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including project managers, mechanical engineers, and environmental specialists, to design scalable and cost-effective systems.

Key Responsibilities:

Lead the design, development, and optimization of process systems for a green hydrogen production facility, focusing on electrolysis, water treatment, and integration with renewable power sources.

Conduct feasibility studies and techno-economic analysis for process improvements, energy efficiency, and cost reduction.

Develop and review process flow diagrams (PFDs), piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs), and heat & material balances for the hydrogen production plant.

Lead process simulations and modeling to optimize performance and ensure operational efficiency.

Collaborate with equipment vendors, contractors, and other stakeholders to identify the best technologies and solutions for green hydrogen production.

Conduct safety and environmental assessments, ensuring compliance with local and international standards, including applicable codes, regulations, and safety protocols.

Oversee the integration of hydrogen production with other plant systems, including storage, transportation, and distribution.

Support the commissioning and startup phases of the facility, providing expert guidance during the initial operation and troubleshooting.

Lead the detailed engineering design of hydrogen production systems, focusing on water electrolysis technologies (e.g., alkaline, PEM, or SOEC) and hydrogen liquefaction processes.

Perform detailed process simulations and modeling to optimize system efficiency, including mass/energy balances and heat integration.

Integrate renewable energy sources (solar, wind, hydroelectric) with the electrolysis process to maximize energy efficiency and ensure sustainable operations.

Work closely with mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation engineers to design and specify equipment, including electrolyzers, compressors, liquefaction units, and storage systems.

Ensure compliance with Canadian safety and environmental regulations, industry standards, and best practices in hydrogen production and liquefaction.

Conduct safety assessments and hazard analysis (HAZOP, LOPA) for process safety management.

Oversee the development of detailed engineering specifications, technical documentation, and procurement packages for all process-related equipment.

Collaborate with the project management team to develop schedules, cost estimates, and risk management plans.

Support the commissioning and startup phases of the facility, including troubleshooting and optimizing plant performance during the initial operation.

Qualifications:

Education:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

Professional Engineer (P.Eng) certification.

Experience:
6–10+ years of experience in process engineering, preferably in hydrogen production, petrochemical, or similar industries.

Expertise in gas handling systems

Experience in designing for sustainability and low-carbon technologies is a plus.

Skills:
Direct experience with hydrogen liquefaction technologies (cryogenic processes, hydrogen compressors, etc.).

Knowledge of Canadian hydrogen and renewable energy regulations, particularly within British Columbia.

(Preferred) Experience with commissioning and start-up activities for large-scale hydrogen facilities.

(Preferred) Experience in green hydrogen production, including water electrolysis (alkaline, PEM, or SOEC) and/or steam methane reforming (SMR) with carbon capture.

Project management experience, including managing timelines, budgets, and stakeholders.
