Sanitary Engineer I
The Department of Water Environment Protection (WEP) provides critical wastewater services to Onondaga County’s Consolidated Sewer District. WHAT EXACTLY DOES A SANITARY ENGINEER I DO?
The work involves responsibility for performing general sanitary engineering and technical analysis of moderate difficulty in support of the operation and maintenance of county wastewater treatment plants, collection system, industrial wastewater pretreatment, and/or water quality monitoring. This is an important role at WEP, and duties will include, but are not limited to:
- Maintain scheduled checks on treatment plant and/or collection system efficiency through periodic review of daily operating records, flow monitoring data and pump station performance as assigned.
- Complete data analysis trends and interpretation of analytical data such as concentrations, flows and loadings. Assists wastewater treatment plant operators to improve plant performance.
- Assist in the analysis, reporting and written communication to needs of the Department to satisfy the permit requirements for regulatory authorities.
- Schedule and coordinate field sampling as it relates to industrial waste, treatment plant and water quality monitoring programs.
- Inspects industrial waste pretreatment facilities for compliance with applicable regulations. Prepares and administers industrial wastewater discharge permits.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Open Competitive:(A) Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelor of Science Degree in chemical, civil, sanitary, or environmental engineering, forest engineering or resource engineering;or, (B) Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelor of Science Degree in chemistry, biology, physics, environmental science, or environmental studies and one (1) year of technical or professional level engineering work experience or its part-time equivalent related to wastewater treatment or water pollution control; or, (C) Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelor of Science Degree in chemistry, biology, physics, environmental science, or environmental studies and three (3) years of work experience as a Wastewater Technician 2, Senior Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator, Principal Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator, Senior Sanitary Technician or Sanitary Chemist I; or, (D) Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a Bachelor of Science Degree in chemistry, biology, physics, environmental science, or environmental studies and five (5) years of work experience as a Wastewater Technician I, Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator or Sanitary Technician; or, (E) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A), (B) and (C)and (D). NOTE: Graduation from a regionally accredited college or university or one accredited by the New York State Board of Regents to grant degrees with a master’s degree in engineering and/or a science as defined above may be substituted for work experience as follows:
· Thirty (30) semester credit hours equals one (1) years of work experience.
· Sixty (60) semester credit hours equals two (2) years of work experience.
SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT: At time of appointment, possession of a valid Class D driver license issued by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles.
ANNUAL SALARY: $63,072 - $69,613
CIVIL SERVICE GRADE: CSEA / 11
POSITION TYPE: Provisional
Candidate will initially be provisional and must take the corresponding Civil Service exam, scheduled at a later date, and place high enough on the list to qualify for appointment.
Full Time: 35 hours/week
