This person will report directly to the Development Engineering Manager. In the role of Development Engineer, you will be joining a world-class Engineering team that is delivering innovative solutions to tough problems.
The person in this role will work closely with operations, development, engineering, and outside contracting groups daily to accomplish these tasks.
This is a full-time position based out of the manufacturing facilities located in Chattanooga, TN. This position will be performed primarily during standard business hours with less than 5% anticipated travel.
Responsibilities include:
Safety (10%)
The development engineer will work with the safety department and Process Engineering to ensure safety is maintained during equipment commissioning and experimentation. The team member will work with the safety department and engineering to assist in safety discussions, audits, and FMEA activities.
Equipment Commissioning (35%)
One of the primary tasks of the Development Engineer will be to coordinate equipment commissioning, including startup activities, first material runs, early-stage troubleshooting and optimization, and handover to Operations. These responsibilities will require close collaboration with other members of the Development Engineering Team, Operations, Engineering, EHS, and external parties. The person in this role will become a process expert for all new equipment.
The Development Engineer will execute these functions with a focus on the interaction between machine performance and material parameters to support product development objectives.
Process Development (35%)
Another primary task of the Development Engineer will be to lead process development
activities, working closely with the Process Engineering Team, the Development Engineering
Team, and external parties. This includes troubleshooting and optimization of existing equipment, experimenting with alternative modes of operation, and testing/validating alternative materials for equipment components.
Again, the Development Engineer will perform these functions with a focus on the interaction between machine performance and material parameters to support product development objectives.
Material Development (20%)
The Development Engineer will assist with formulating new products, planning and executing trials on pilot and production scale equipment, and managing shipment of experimental samples to customers. The person in this role may be assigned as a designated contact for certain customers and as such would be responsible for maintaining positive and productive relationships, communicating project updates, and fostering expansion of production agreements.

- B.S. in Engineering, Chemistry, or related scientific field.
- 3 years of Process Engineering experience with a demonstrated record of resolving equipment issues.
- Strong interest in Research and Development.
- Knowledge of bulk material processing systems and material transfer.
- Experience with high-temperature equipment.
- The ability to combine pieces of information to form general rules or conclusions (includes finding a relationship among seemingly unrelated events).
- Ability to prioritize and balance multiple competing demands.
- Team player, able to work effectively with colleagues in other areas and at other levels of the organization.
- Strong attention to detail and creative thinking in development procedures and data reporting.
- Strong written and verbal communication.
- A willingness to take on responsibilities and challenges as required.
- Knowledge of electrochemical systems, specifically as it relates to lithium-ion battery chemistry.
- Knowledge of Statistical Software such as Minitab or R
- Experience in experimental reporting and data analytics
- Knowledge of Lean/6 Sigma methodology
- Laboratory skills and an understanding of physical/electrochemical property characterization
