About us: Accelerating Community Energy Transformation (ACET) is a multi-partner research initiative led by the University of Victoria, with a purpose to deliver world-leading research, enabling equitable, community-led energy transitions that can be scaled globally to reduce emissions and enhance community well-being.

The salary range for this position is:

  • Recruitment range: $75,755- $83,525 starting salary determined by the PEA Collective Agreement.
  • Performance range: starting salary to max of $98,528 is available through annual performance increases.
Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Operations in ACET, the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion and Training Officer (EDITO) is the EDI specialist to ensure that ACET activities are guided by equity, diversity and inclusion principles and in alignment with ACET’s EDI Action Plan, UVic’s Equity Action Plan and partner universities’ EDI frameworks, as well as the CFREF’s EDI expectations and specific requirements.

The position’s major project will be the implementation of ACET’s EDI action plan tailored to the requirements of the CFREF funding agency. The officer will work closely with ACET’s EDI special advisors including the EDI Research Officer from the Vice President Research & Innovation (VPRI) and the Office of Equity and Human Rights (EQHR) as well as key collaborators from the 4 partner universities and other CFREF funded initiatives, to carry out the proposed actions to address systemic barriers and to make positive impacts to the Canadian population including historically and systemically marginalized groups. The officer will interact through regular meetings and discussions with other CFREF-awarded institutions to build a community of practice on EDI implementation and action plans.

The EDITO will assume the role in building a sustainable operational structure for ACET projects that are designed and implemented based on EDI principles. This includes promoting equitable recruitment and retention strategies within ACET to attract, support and develop a diverse community of talented researchers and key personnel, and facilitating adoption of best practices of equity, diversity, accessibility and inclusion among those in ACET with supervisory responsibilities.

The EDITO will coordinate diverse education opportunities for ACET members on various topics to address systemic barriers and how to embed the values of equity, diversity and inclusion within the ACET program’s daily practices and project definitions. This will include education for Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP), and harmonization of EDI education and practices across ACET partnered institutions.

The EDITO will be responsible for developing and implementing an equity data collection and analysis structure and reporting to the ACET institutions as well as to the CFREF program within a requested timeframe (i.e. annually).

The EDITO will consult with the ACET Executive Director and Directors to ensure that at the interface between ACET Institutions and all types of partners that to the extent possible best practices in EDI are promoted outward to collaborators.

Job Requirements

University degree in a related field (e.g. human resources management, social justice, sociology, education, public administration, psychology) and a minimum of 3-4 years of related professional experience in equity, diversity and inclusion. Experience in an academic setting is highly valued. Equivalent combinations of education, training and/or experience may be considered.

Experience must include:

  • Experience designing, developing and implementing programs and practices that advance equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Knowledge of issues and concerns of historically and systemically marginalized groups; contextual understanding of the dynamics of prejudice and discrimination.
  • Advanced content expertise and knowledge of research findings/best practices in the EDI landscape.
  • Knowledge and ability to have impact within research and innovation sector of the post-secondary environment
  • Familiarity with funding models and external research organizations and funders (SSHRC, NSERC, CRC, etc.) and capacity to engage with these organizations.
  • Familiarity with the academic search, hiring and personnel processes and practices.
  • Capacity to communicate effectively with academic and other administrators.
  • Collaborator engagement including developing and delivering initiatives that involve diverse collaborators with competing needs.
  • Broad understanding and inclusive approach to building consensus and solving problems creatively.
  • Gathering, synthesizing, evaluating and interpreting information from diverse sources.
  • Working with and providing advice to internal and external leadership personnel.

Skills and competencies must include:

  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills in a collegial environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with engagement processes that exhibit the principles of equity, diversity and inclusion.
  • Demonstrated skills in leading complex projects, project management, implementation and reporting.
  • Ability to navigate complex institutions and work across silos and power relationships.
  • Ability to navigate conflict and engage in problem solving.
  • High level of confidentiality and professionalism, and ability to deal with sensitive issues with tact and diplomacy.
  • Self-motivated and self-directed with a willingness to take on new responsibilities and adapt, manage and facilitate change.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to balance and manage multiple priorities.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and be adaptable to emerging and changing priorities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Skilled at building equitable relationships, building networks and connections both with internal and external partners.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team setting and collaborating and negotiating with a broad range of people to achieve goals and objectives.
  • Working knowledge, willingness to learn more about local Indigenous protocols and cultural practices.
