The Iowa Department of Revenue’s Alcohol & Tax Operations Division is currently seeking a Taxpayer Service Specialist 1. This division administers, enforces, and educates stakeholders on the state's alcoholic beverage control laws.

There are four bureaus within the Alcohol & Tax Operations Division:

  • Licensing Administration
  • Regulatory Compliance
  • Fulfillment and Distribution
  • Revenue Operations
In this position you will:
  • Receive documents electronically and manually for processing. Prepare source data for entry into proprietary state systems by reviewing forms for accuracy and deficiencies
  • Process business license applications for accounts and issues licenses, certificates, and permits following department procedures. Handle confidential information, and make decisions based on strong understanding of license requirements and agency systems
  • Develop intermediate knowledge and skills to interpret Iowa Code and Rules applicable to Iowa Alcohol laws
  • Answers help line and assists with questions regarding Iowa alcohol laws and other licensing-related questions and escalating more complex inquiries to a Taxpayer Services Specialist 2 or 3, or to the appropriate Department of Revenue contact
  • Display a high level of initiative, effort, attention to detail and commitment by completing assignments efficiently with minimal supervision
  • Determine the level of technical or system assistance needed and take appropriate steps to resolve issues such as login assistance, password resets, and relaying more complex issues to the Taxpayer Services Specialist 3
  • Provide support to the front desk and walk-in customers
Preference will be given to candidates with the following:
  • Ability to identify issues and explain various courses of action for resolution
  • Experience with the principles and processes for providing customer service including a call center environment
  • Experience in the analysis and reporting of financial, tax and business information
  • Experience in responding to inquiries and communication via phone, email, and in person
  • Experience interpreting and following oral and written instructions
Job Specific Competencies:
  • Customer Service - principles and processes for providing customer services, including customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluating customer satisfaction
  • Oral Comprehension – Listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences
  • Clerical Procedures – Word processing, managing files and records, designing forms, and other office procedures and terminology

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

1) Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate’s degree in any field.

2) A total of two years of education and/or full-time experience, where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in any field equals one year of full-time experience in tax, accounting, bookkeeping, auditing, insurance, analysis of financial or business forms and data, or answering technical or tax-related questions.

3) Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes one year of full-time work in tax, accounting, bookkeeping, auditing, insurance, analysis of financial or business forms and data, or answering technical or tax-related questions.
