Assessment accommodation

The position will be based out of Gatineau but the opportunity exists for students to base from other ECCC locations. The student will be expected to adhere to federal common hybrid work model guidelines.

Duties

One of the CCCS's primary responsibilities is the assessment of climate data and products, which are then made available to the public via data portals, web applications, extraction tools, and online processing tools (for more information, please see ClimateData.ca). The selected student will have the opportunity to contribute to this work and participate in a collaborative effort between multiple federal government departments, other levels of government, and regional climate expert organizations.

Possible tasks include:
  • Supporting development, validation, and publication of national-scale future projections of the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) climate zones for building climate resilience planning.
  • Evaluating the feasibility of future projections of wet bulb temperatures for Canada.
  • Supporting evaluation of new climate datasets for floods and wildfires.
  • Developing guidance and learning tools on using climate data for adaptation.
  • Execute customized climate data extractions for adaptation to climate change.

Work environment

The Canadian Centre for Climate Services (CCCS) is an innovative organization within Environment and Climate Change Canada. Established by the federal government, the CCCS provides climate information and decision support tools to help build Canada's resilience to climate change. The CCCS offers user-driven climate services based on authoritative climate data, with the goal of empowering Canadians to make climate-smart adaptation decisions that lead to a more resilient Canada.

EDUCATION
The student must be currently enrolled in a Master’s or Doctorate program in a recognized post-secondary institution in atmospheric science, climate science, or other related disciplines at a Canadian University.

Degree equivalency

EXPERIENCE
The student must be able to demonstrate the following experience: In the context of student recruitment in the Federal Public Service, experience can be gained through academic studies, professional work experience, or participation in volunteer activities. The following experience is considered essential:
  • Analyzing climate data
  • Using scientific programming languages (e.g., Python or shell scripting)
  • Science communication, oral or written

  • Working with Linux/Unix high performance computing systems
  • Statistical processing of outputs of global or regional climate models (GCMs or RCMs) for use in applied climate analyses
  • Using climate projections to generate climate change impact information for stakeholders.
