Position Summary:
The Sr. Genomics Applications Scientist (GAS) position is a newly formed role at Illumina Canada responsible for all aspects of customer success. The successful applicant will be part of an award-winning customer support and sales team that leads the industry in customer satisfaction. The overall objective of the role is to partner with customers to advance genomics applications, provide technical training, troubleshooting, and complaint resolution. This position serves as a scientific expert consultant during pre- and post-sales activities and will collaborate with broader commercial team to maximize sales growth and customer satisfaction.
In addition to the customer facing technical support activities, the GAS will also have the responsibility to ensure achievement of a Canada Region sales objectives in line with the company's mission, to enable sales growth through strategic activities, to be a technical resource for the Illumina Sequencing product lines, and to provide regular reports on status of specific sales, the market and competitor activities.
Sales efforts will be in coordination with the larger commercial team including Genomics Applications Scientist 2(GAS),Territory Account Managers, and to be the key technical resource for the sales of the Illumina Sequencing and Informatics product lines. The role will be an active and integral part of the sales process and will be accountable for the activities within a Canada Region, in-line with the genomics market and commercial objectives, by achieving revenue expectations. This role requires expert-level troubleshooting, communication, time management, situational awareness, poise under pressure, and collaboration. You will be expected to build and maintain strong relationships across district Service and Support teams, Regional Product Support, Marketing, Sales, Customer Service, and Quality organizations.
This role is responsible for meeting the budgeted annual sales and expense targets for the defined sales Canada Region for Illumina’s Sequencing business for instruments, core consumables, library prep, data analysis and other bioinformatics products.
Sales and support efforts will be in coordination with the larger commercial team and to be the key technical resource for Illumina Canada as it pertains to Sequencing and Informatics product lines. The role will be an active and integral part of the sales and support process and will be accountable for the activities within a territory, in-line with the genomics market and commercial objectives, by achieving revenue expectations and customer support requirements. This role is responsible for ensuring timely resolution, training, consulting and meeting the goals of the service and support organization for the territory as well this role will be directly supporting the primary field team member meeting the budgeted annual sales and expense targets for the defined sales territories for Illumina’s Sequencing business for instruments, core consumables, library prep, data analysis and other bioinformatics products..
Must be located in Canada and capable of travel within assigned territory.
Bilingual (English and French) preferred.

Responsibilities:
  • Consult on customer lab and experimental design, workflow best practices, and data storage and analysis.
  • Coordinate new installations, including large-scale installations, that require facility inspections and instrument validation.
  • Conduct on-site customer trainings across the entire Illumina portfolio of products including microarray, Next-Generation Sequencing, library preparation, bioinformatics, consumables, and related products. Can serve as a mentor for colleagues.
  • Resolve customer complaints related to biochemistry, assay or experimental design, software, instruments, or user's technical skill. Escalate to appropriate internal resources as necessary to maximize customer uptime and minimize customer effort.
  • Close sales prospects to meet sales targets.
  • Participates in strategic sales activities and works closely with local Territory Account Managers and District Sales Manager to achieve sales objectives.
  • Coordinates and communicates strategic business plans effectively to manager.
  • Regularly communicate essential technical product updates to external customers and Sales counterparts to drive customer success.
  • Partner with other functional roles and teammates under the Illumina team selling model that includes GAS 2 various specialist roles, account managers, district sales managers, and Inside Sales to execute and develop strategic plans for winning new business and expanding current customer growth and success through consulting, presentations, workshops, demonstrations, and seminars.
  • Responsible for customer relationship management, understanding customer goals, setting appropriate product and performance expectations, and gathering intelligence regarding competitive intel and new sales opportunities.
  • Support new product development through alpha and beta tests and serve as departmental representative on product core teams.
  • Broad knowledge of competitor activities and innovations within the marketplace and ability to evaluate and consult on data.
  • Provide efficient communication on strategic and competitive customer feedback to Sales, Marketing, and product development teams.
  • Lead departmental project teams; work collaboratively to ensure successful execution of project plans and track, manage, and communicate progress to team and stakeholders.
  • Prioritize tasks and responsibilities to achieve departmental key performance metrics.
  • Interfaces with corporate product teams and field marketing to bring key technical product knowledge to the field.
  • Quarterly or as needed trips to Illumina HQ to directly interact with key marketing and R&D colleagues.
  • Reads, understands, and communicates key findings from current scientific sequencing publications to sales team and customers.
  • Presents technical seminars on Illumina Sequencing product lines.
  • Assist in the development of training material for the GAS role as directed by your Manager.
  • Coordinate support and sales workload for your Canadian Region
  • Support trade-shows and conferences as needed within and outside of region, including booth support and presentations
  • Communicates essential product knowledge to local Regional Account Managers and customers to facilitate sales
  • Assists Regional Sales Manager and Regional Account Managers with the development of customized territory plans – and follows territory plans to provide best return on sales territory and consolidation of travel – time management
  • Maintains an effective, professional working relationship with internal customers and product development groupsAppropriately utilize company resources required to support a sale, with regard to company operating expenses.
  • Assist with workshops, conventions, seminar series and other marketing activities as required. Prospect Selection & Screening
  • Work with other company personnel as intermediaries (when appropriate) to establish target customer relationships
  • Distinguish between regular sales and business development opportunities. When the latter is identified bring Commercial Development into the customer relationship.
  • Represent the company professionally, ethically, and morally at all times.

Requirements:
  • 7+ years biotech experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of genomics, sequencing applications, and methods that apply to Illumina technology.
  • Prior field experience supporting customers in a highly technical field preferred.
  • Proficient with general lab best practices and common Molecular Biology techniques.
  • Experience with lab or liquid handling automation helpful.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with principal investigator-level scientists as well as bioinformaticians and laboratory personnel.
  • Proven ability to resolve complex customer issues while maintaining positive customer relations.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication and excellent presentation and training skills.
  • Ability to operate as an independent contributor and as a cooperative member of a team.
  • Clear vision of and commitment to providing outstanding customer service.
  • Ability to successfully operate in a fast paced, rapidly changing environment.
  • Capacity to maintain composure in stressful situations.
  • Must be willing to travel up to 50%.

Education:
  • Typically requires a Master’s degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics, or related field and 5+ years of experience; or a PhD
