Job Description
This position is for responsible for the ongoing development and enhancement of the plant’s Environmental and Health and Safety Program. This involves implementing the approved environmental, health and safety initiatives to maintain compliance with all respective legislations . Performing inspections of the facility and equipment, identifying potential hazards, and recommending preventative measures. Investigate incidents, and work-related illnesses.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Responsible for management of day-to-day management of the health & safety issues within the plant and WSIB Claims.
- Coordinate and chair the Joint Health and Safety Committee.
- Implement and oversee safety and environmental programs.
- Promote a strong environment, health, safety and sustainability culture.
- Identification of hazardous conditions and practices and work with teams to share safety best practices to correct EHS related matters.
- Ensuring the quality of incident reporting, accident investigations, and the maintenance of records in accordance with regulatory requirements.
- Arrange and coordinate Return-to-Work and modified duties for employees.
- Maintain/update Job Safety Analysis and preparation of safe work practices.
- Provide support, advice, and guidance with respect to all health and safety activities.
- Coordinate training of employees such as WHMIS, fall protection, confined space entry, Lock-Out/Tag-Out, respiratory protection, hearing conservation, and emergency response.
- Produce reports and statistical information as required.
- Work closely with management to ensure all Health and Safety policies and procedures are adhered to as required by legislation.
- Partner with Maintenance to submit work orders to address H&S concerns in working areas and on equipment.
- Daily walks through the Production Plant, etc. for inspections of all work areas.
- Research, review, and partner with external vendors for EHS initiatives.
- Investigate and address employee health and safety concerns.
- Participate in Health and Safety orientation training of newly hired employees.
- Ensure Health and Safety inspections are completed and filed properly (hot work permits, fall arrest equipment inspections, etc.).
- Manage monthly workplace inspection program, report findings, and conduct follow-ups to ensure corrective actions are implemented.
- Act as the main contact for after hours emergencies when required. Provide advice and direction to onsite team via telephone and/or email.
- Coordinate emergency preparedness and response activities.
- Work with EHS Manager to develop and conduct training programs as required.
- Other duties as required.
Skills and Abilities:
- Comprehensive knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act, Building Code and Workplace Safety Insurance Act.
- Training in hazard recognition, assessment, and control.
- Knowledge and experience with implementation of Return to Work and modified work programs.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to work with management personnel in a collaborative environment.
- Self starting, proactive individual who can work well independently and in a team environment.
- Transparency in dealing with others, high level of integrity and work ethic.
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications (Word and Excel).
- Excellent analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills.
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in an accredited Occupational Health and Safety certification program or similar.
- JHSC Level 2 certification
Experience:
- Minimum 5+ years’ experience in the administration of policies and legislative compliance in similar role.
- Experience in similar role, preferably in a manufacturing environment.
- Experience with Environmental Health and Safety systems is considered an asset
