Location: This is a full-time, onsite position located in San Francisco, CA.
Reports to: Co-Executive Directors.

Located in San Francisco’s historic Fillmore/Western Addition neighborhood, the African American Art & Culture Complex (AAACC) presents, offers, and celebrates Black art, artists, and culture through educational, innovative, enriching, and empowering programs and services that inspire and uplift the community. Within its 34,000-square-foot facility, the center provides a wide variety of art and cultural programming for youth, adults, and families, including visual, digital, and performance. The center features two indoor galleries, an outdoor gallery showcasing murals, and a 206-seat theater for live shows, film screenings, and seminars. Recognized as one of the premier Black arts and cultural institutions in the San Francisco Bay Area, AAACC houses some of the most celebrated African American arts and culture organizations in the region.
Job Summary
Located in the vibrant Fillmore district of San Francisco, the African American Art & Culture Complex (AAACC) is dedicated to preserving, promoting, and championing African American arts and culture. To further this mission, we are actively seeking a Finance and Accounting Manager with a strong background in finance, accounting, and administrative operations, especially within the nonprofit sector.
As the Finance and Accounting Manager, you will oversee the financial landscape of AAACC and shape its financial future. Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Operations & Bookkeeping:
- Oversee all incoming and outgoing transactions, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
- Manage AP/AR operations, ensuring prompt payment and revenue collection.
- Conduct monthly, quarterly, and annual account reconciliations.
- Design, maintain, and update financial procedures and policies.
Comprehensive Financial Management:
- Spearhead the development and implementation of financial policies and procedures to enhance operational efficiency.
- Oversee day-to-day financial operations, from transaction logging to more complex account management activities.
- Regularly assess financial risks and opportunities to guide the organization's fiscal strategy.
Budgeting, Planning, and Forecasting:
- Collaborate with departmental heads in the creation, review, and adjustment of departmental and organizational budgets.
- Monitor expenditures against budgets, identifying discrepancies.
- Engage in long-term financial forecasting, integrating macro and microeconomic indicators to ensure the organization's sustained growth.
- Provide detailed financial analyses as a foundation for strategic decisions.
In-depth Financial Reporting & Analysis:
- Prepare exhaustive monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports, incorporating qualitative insights alongside quantitative data—present findings and recommendations to the Board and Executive Directors.
- Regularly audit financial processes and operations, proposing and implementing improvements when needed.
- Develop and oversee an MIS platform for tracking financial commitments and obligations.
- Conduct trend analyses to identify potential areas of growth or concern, providing actionable recommendations.
Regulatory Compliance & Best Practices:
- Continuously update the organization's practices based on evolving nonprofit accounting and financial regulations and ensure AAACC’s adherence.
- Oversee the entire reporting lifecycle: from preparing budgetary planning documents to offering interim updates on fund utilization, and finally, compiling comprehensive final reports post-project completion.
- Lead initiatives for annual financial audits, liaising with external auditors, and ensuring all financial statements adhere to local, state, and federal requirements.
- Cultivate and develop risk management strategies and ensure a culture of financial best practices are in line with statutory regulations in financial management, ensuring every department aligns with these standards.
Team Leadership & Inter-departmental Collaboration:
- Act as the primary liaison between the finance department and work cross-functionally with other departments to ensure financial processes support operational needs and promote open channels of communication and collaboration.
- Facilitate regular financial training sessions for non-finance personnel to cultivate an organization-wide financial awareness.
Profile of Candidate
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field. Has a minimum of 7 years of experience in pivotal financial roles, with an emphasis on those who have thrived in the nonprofit sector.
- Experience in nonprofit budget management, financial report interpretation, and an understanding of funding dynamics is essential.
- Demonstrates expertise in accounting software, notably Quickbooks Online, and tools like BILL and Divvy. Familiarity with modern MIS systems and other financial platforms is crucial.
- Has proven expertise in analyzing complex financial data, uncovering patterns, and strategizing based on these insights. Prior experience in advisory roles, especially for executive leadership and boards, will be a significant plus.
- Has demonstrable success in working alongside leadership teams, bringing financial insights to the table that account for the needs of AAACC, the broader community, and funding partners. An inspiring leader, known for both empathy and decisiveness.
- Operates with unyielding integrity, resilience, accuracy, and humility. Has a deep appreciation for AAACC's mission and a recognition of the role finances play in its realization.
- Stays updated on trends, regulations, and emerging best practices in the financial realm, with particular emphasis on the nonprofit sector.
- Detail-oriented, adaptable, and adept at juggling varied responsibilities. Exceptional at setting priorities in a dynamic environment.
- Proficient in Google Workspace and MS Office Suite (especially Excel, PowerPoint, and Word).
- Has top-notch presentation skills complemented by adept written and verbal communication abilities.
- Is prepared to work beyond conventional hours, including some evenings and weekends when the role demands.

Start Time Frame: We aim to have someone in place by Fall 2024. If possible, AAACC would welcome the Finance and Accounting Manager in October.
