Job Description
This role requires a visionary leader who utilizes their extensive experience in developing, facilitating and evaluating workforce development solutions and interventions, to elevate the leadership capacity within organizations. This position will be responsible for designing, overseeing, and leading a significant growth strategy for the institute, ensuring that we can amplify our mission across UCSF, the greater Bay area, country and globe, partly through the development and launch of an international training hub. The growth strategy will entail expanding current partnerships, growing external partnerships, while drafting and executing complex multi-year agreements.
In addition, this role is responsible for advising senior leadership on high impact practices aimed at developing leadership capacity, across the organization and in service to its multiple missions, in alignment with industry trends. Therefore, the director will serve as the primary relationship manager for the Institute’s domestic and global partners. Due to complexity of the financial structures within the Leadership Institute, the ideal candidate will display a strong financial acumen and be skilled in building and analyzing operational budgets and multiple year forecasts. As the institute has regional, national and global impact, travel is required of this role.

Department Description
The UCSF Leadership Institute, an integrated structure between the UCSF School of Nursing and UCSF Health, provides outcome-driven leadership development and advanced evidence-based practice (EBP) trainings for the healthcare professional and academic leader across the career continuum. Within the institute’s portfolio of programs are a suite of distinct and comprehensive leadership development programs, multiple evidence-based practice trainings pathways, as well as several specialty programs. The institute currently employs nine full-time employees across both UCSF Health and the School of Nursing, boasts eight faculty appointees from the School of Nursing and School of Medicine, and has over a dozen contractors or volunteers which serve as executive coaches and subject matter experts within our programs.
Within the last two years, the Leadership Institute has seen significant growth with these trends only expected to continue due to ongoing workforce training demands. In spring 2024, the Leadership Institute will begin offering leadership development programs for the campus enterprise at UCSF, while continuing to grow regional, national and global partnerships for clinical leadership and EBP programs.
Required Qualifications
- Advanced degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training
- Minimum eight years of related experience, seven of which were in a lead/supervisory/management capacity
- Advanced knowledge of medical center, HR and / or UC policies and processes
- Thorough knowledge of relevant compliance issues
- In-depth knowledge and applied background in training and development
- Advanced knowledge eLearning techniques, learning software and technology
- Knowledge of business / industry trends
- Proven ability to apply theoretical concepts to define training methodologies and ensure programs improve operations and achieve organization goals
- Advanced ability to organize, simplify and increase department efficiency while maintaining standards and compliance
- Advanced ability to collaborate with senior management on setting objectives, defining department goals, and managing the implementation of initiatives
- Highly advanced leadership ability to oversee multiple functions through subordinate managers appropriately granting autonomy while knowing when to intervene
- Highly experienced active listener
- Advanced user of business software
- Translates conflict management techniques to resolve sensitive, high impact situations
- Strong interpersonal skills to develop and maintain professional relationships with department managers and coordinate training and development activities across functions
- Ability to work collaboratively and promote others, soliciting and incorporating ideas when appropriate
- Ability to apply policy knowledge to proactively identify potential areas of risk relative to training and development
- Ability to persuade and gain acceptance from others
- Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills to address critical and / or sensitive situations
- Ability to identify technological inefficiencies, research new technologies and recommend / adopt alternatives
- Highly adaptive with ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
