Laboratory Test Technician , AlumaPower Corporation

Our breakthrough multi-patented technology re-invents the aluminum-air battery as a ‘galvanic generator’.
We are now developing an innovative long-life energy source that runs on post-consumer scrap, or “abandoned” aluminum, as a fuel source - displacing hydrocarbons and complementing other battery solutions such as lithium-ion.
This job is based in Kitchener. You will report to our Senior Research and Development Scientist and will play a crucial role in supporting our engineering team in designing, testing, and troubleshooting systems.

Qualifications/Skills:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in chemistry, electrochemistry, material science, chemical engineering or a related discipline with a demonstrated passion for lifelong learning
- Min 1 year of electrochemistry-related experience working in a collaborative R&D team environment is required
- Hands-on experience with tools, laboratory apparatus, and analytical equipment.
- Proficiency in the principles and techniques for a range of methods in materials characterization (e.g., XRD, TGA, SEM)
- Experience working within extended internal and external teams.
- Ability to think strategically, innovatively and creatively using sound business judgment and quantitative skills.
- Strong theoretical and hands-on understanding of chemistry and chemical safety
- Strengths in problem-solving, issue resolution, excellent attention to detail, ability to work in a deadline-driven work environment, attention to detail, and ability to multitask.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills (English) with the ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner
- Proficiency in metal-air battery technology and familiarity with methods for testing materials and fabrication are preferred.
- Additional experience in nanotechnology, corrosion, materials, and chemical production processes is a plus.
- Expertise in data analysis and visualization is a plus
- Knowledge of Software Modeling Electrode Structure, Kinetics, Ion Transport, Mass Transport, Fluid Flow, and Heat Transfer in 1D, 2D, and 3D are a plus
Job Duties
- Prepare and process samples according to established procedures and protocols.
- Ensure accurate labeling and documentation of samples.
- Conduct a wide range of laboratory tests and experiments, including chemical, electrochemical, physical, and materials tests.
- Operate and maintain laboratory equipment and instruments.
- Record and analyze test results, ensuring accuracy and precision.
- Maintain detailed and accurate records of all tests and experiments.
- Enter data into laboratory information management systems (LIMS) and generate reports as required.
- Assist in the interpretation of test results and prepare summaries for review.
- Write reports and present the outcomes of different R&D projects for internal and external purposes.
- Perform routine calibration and maintenance of laboratory equipment to ensure proper functioning.
- Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and quality control protocols.
- Participate in internal and external quality assurance programs.
- Adhere to all laboratory safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment.
- Handle hazardous materials and waste according to regulatory guidelines.
- Stay current with safety regulations and best practices.
- Work collaboratively with scientists, engineers, and other technical staff to support research and development projects.
- Communicate test results and findings clearly and effectively.
- Provide technical support and training to new laboratory staff as needed.
- Monitor inventory levels of laboratory supplies and reagents.
- Order and replenish supplies as needed to ensure continuous operation.
- Troubleshoot and resolve minor equipment issues, coordinating with service technicians for major repairs.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance laboratory operations.
- Suggest and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy.
- Stay updated on new testing methods, technologies, and industry trends.
- Battery unit and parts assembly required
Compensation
- Commensurate with experience.
Location
- Kitchener, Ontario, Canada – with occasional travel
- You must be fully permitted to live and work in Canada.
Job Type and Working Conditions
- Infrequent travel to production/supplier/testing facilities, primarily in Southern Ontario or the Northeast USA.
- Manual dexterity is required to use desktop computers and peripherals.
- Physical ability to perform tasks that may include lifting and handling samples and equipment.

- Fluency in French will be considered an asset.
