The University of Toronto Scarborough has been a leader in co-operative education and work integrated learning (WIL), for 50 years. Co-op and WIL give students an opportunity to apply skills learned in the classroom, and to expand their knowledge through related work experience. The Department of Arts and Science Co-op is responsible for preparing over 3000 undergraduate students from 58 academic areas to compete for paid co-op work term opportunities. The department is also responsible for engaging industry partners who provide these work terms. A coordinated effort among the stakeholders of student, employer, and university co-op programming contribute to the development of well qualified graduates who are prepared to assume a productive role in society. Your opportunity:

Reporting to the Assistant Director, Partnerships and External Relations, the Business Development Officer takes a planned and informed approach to meeting new business development targets and achieving business development goals within a bunch of important industry sectors. Through inbound marketing and sales development methodologies this person plays a vital role in the department to ensure that employers across multiple sectors are made aware of our co-op programs and signed up to hire our students for their co-op needs. The focus of such business development, awareness building and employer engagement initiatives would be that our students have a wide range of quality, paid co-op work term opportunities available to them.


While balancing all stakeholder needs effectively, the primary goal of the position is to develop, nurture and manage strong relationships with new employers and sensitize them to our co-op talent. The Business Development Officer is responsible for developing and initiating all aspects of new employer relationships that strategically support the academic programs within the chosen sectors. Using an analytical and informed approach, the role is responsible for conducting market research to understand the industry sectors assigned to them and identifying target employers and industry partners that are a right fit for our co-op jobs. Through sound B2B sales, business development and inbound marketing techniques, the Business Development Officer builds their employer and account base by planning and undertaking first contact with potential new partners and move them in a journey to sign up with Arts and Science Co-op programs as partners. With an ultimate goal of expanding our co-op opportunities to net new employers the role is responsible for maintaining and expanding new and existing but inactive or dormant relationships with employers, and set up meaningful engagement with them.
In consultation with the Assistant Director, the role will set an annual plan for their sectors and performance targets for new employer acquisition and managing some existing partner organizations whose members have strong co-op job potential each work term. All of this is done on the foundation and ultimate collective goal of facilitating student success and supporting their co-op ambitions.

Your responsibilities will include:


  • Building and strengthening relationships with stakeholders and partners of strategic importance
  • Identifying, fostering and maintaining relationships with potential and existing employers
  • Researching and analyzing potential employers and recommending student placement opportunities
  • Analyzing data to determine trends and recommend target markets
  • Determining logistical details and activities for campus events and/or industry events
  • Developing and implementing marketing plans to promote programs, events and/or initiatives that support strategic objectives
  • Developing content for marketing and/or promotional materials
  • Generating and developing reports on business development activities


Essential Qualifications:


  • Bachelor's Degree or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
  • Minimum five years' experience in a Business to Business (B2B) sales environment in any industry. Potential experience may include sales development, inside sales, account management, business development, or client engagement.
  • Track record of success in a target driven environment and building client relationships in existing and new market sectors
  • Demonstrated experience and strong understanding implementing sales life cycle, business development and sales funnel approaches and tracking activities to desired outcome
  • Experience in planning and implementing online and in person events and measuring event outcomes for the purposes of lead generation
  • Motivated through individual planning and target achievement, yet still thrives in a collaborative team-based environment
  • Must show evidence of a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and the promotion of a respectful and collegial learning and working environment
  • Strong customer service orientation and ability to effectively balance the needs of multiple stakeholders
  • Excellent presentation skills and the ability to speak to and lead targeted group presentations
  • Good judgement, tact and discretion and able to resolve issues, problems and competing goals
  • Organized, able to prioritize work and multi-task to facilitate a balance of planned execution and adherence to process while still ensuring an efficient pace
  • Good written and verbal communications skills, with a strong emphasis on influencing skills


Assets (Nonessential):


  • Familiarity with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and email and/or marketing automation tools.
