Job Summary

A Brief Overview
Reporting to the Financial Manager, School of Rehabilitation Therapy, the Research Grants & Financial Officer is responsible for assisting faculty and research teams with research related finances, human resources, and pre-award and post‐award research grants processes. This position is responsible for optimizing faculty success in research grant and contract competitions by assisting faculty and research teams apply for grants from agencies such as CIHR, SSHRC, NSERC, CFI, Non-Government Organizations, foundations, health authorities and professional bodies. The incumbent prepares research budgets and staffing plans to ensure that relevant School, University and funder policies and procedures are followed in grant submissions. The incumbent performs financial and accounting duties, including purchasing of good and services along with invoice payments through acQuire, and processing travel and expense reimbursements through ERS. This position coordinates all research human resources duties, including the role of timekeeper. The incumbent is responsible for the hiring process for all research related employee groups, and for processing biweekly casual pay. Experience in Queen's systems such as TRAQ, ERS, acQuire and PeopleSoft Human Resources, Students, and Finance is an asset.This position processes financial transactions and account management. This position coordinates and prepares financial reports for various research grants and contracts. This position oversees research grants and contracts finances and acts as the Financial Services representative for project audits. This position directs, allocates and supervises the work of other staff.

Job Description
What you will do
  • Processes financial transactions and account management such as establishing research accounts, setting up approved budgets, communicate funding requirements for each grant to researchers and research teams.
  • Monitors long term debt obligations of research grants and reviews budgets to ensure compliance with university and funding agency policies and procedures.
  • Interprets research policies and eligibility guidelines for various granting agencies and contracts.
  • Reviews and amends grants and contract proposals for submission, for both individual researchers and research teams.
  • Coordinates and prepares financial reports for various research grants and contracts.
  • Acts as the Financial Services representative for project audits.
  • Directs, allocates and supervises the work of other staff.
Required Education
  • Three-year Community College Diploma or Three-Year Bachelor Degree, or equivalent.
    • in finance preferred.
    • in accounting preferred.
Required Experience
  • More than 3 years and up to and including 5 years of experience.
    • Experience in general financial control practices considered an asset (e.g., accounts payable, cost accounting, financial reporting, etc.).
    • Experience in financial management practices considered an asset.
Required Licenses and Certifications
  • Satisfactory Criminal Records Check required.

Consideration may be given to an equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Identify opportunities to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of work processes.
  • Draw logical conclusions and provides opinions and recommendations.
  • Research equity, diversity, accessibility and inclusion resources and best practices relevant to the job and unit operations in order to inform evidence-based planning.
  • Commitment to principles of equity, diversity, accessibility, inclusion, Indigenization and human rights for equity deserving groups.
  • Assess the suitability of job candidates and recommend the most appropriate person for hire.
  • Monitor and assess output and the quality of work from team members and recommend need for formal training or development plans to management and identify possible performance and/or disciplinary issues.
